The Role
Reporting to the Director Health Information Office (HIO), the Assistant Director Health Analytics & Insights will be responsible for:

  • Training, leading and managing an integrated workforce of APS and contracted staff, ensuring understanding of and compliance with data governance and quality requirements.
  • Coordinating the effective workflow of the health analytics and insights team, including triage and prioritisation of requests and taskings to meet deadlines.
  • Developing, documenting and implementing quality assurance process for the Health Analytics and Insights team.
  • Collaborating with the Health Data Management team to understand Defence health data holdings and advise on data extraction requirements.
  • Engaging with stakeholders to: understand the purpose of their data request and the outcomes they hope to achieve to clearly define and specify their data needs; and translate analysis of data and trends into insights that will inform their decision making
  • Leading analytics projects from initial brief to implementation, guiding a team of data analysts to identify and assess trends to support HIO stakeholders.
  • Providing technical and/or statistical advice and information to HIO stakeholders undertaking data analytics or research projects and the senior leadership team concerning ADF member health and the Defence health system.
  • Providing an advisory and consultancy service to Joint Health Command directorates undertaking data analytics or research projects and external stakeholders such as universities and government agencies wishing to conduct data analytic projects using Defence health data.
  • Preparing and contributing to correspondence, reports, briefs and analyses for internal and external publication and peer review.

The Health Information Office (HIO) supports these activities by enabling data driven decision making at all levels of the organisation through report development and insight generation, utilising data from the Defence-electronic Health System and other linked data sources.


The Assistant Director Health Analytics & Insights is expected to produce high quality, accurate and well-researched work while managing a high workload and competing priorities.

This requires high level project management, communication ,and critical thinking skills to effectively manage complexity in an a dynamic work environment.
