Field Research Assistant

  • 2 Full time, fixed term positions available (Duration 8 months)
  • Based in Hobart/Macquarie Island
  • Are you passionate about protecting priority wildlife populations?

The Opportunity

Within these roles the research assistants will contribute with the implementation of the Macquarie Island Wildlife Monitoring Program, which is led by the Department of Natural Resources and Environment Tasmania in collaboration with IMAS and the Australian Antarctic Division.

Research assistants will be responsible for the collection and curation of robust population and demography data on seabirds and seals breeding on World Heritage listed sub-Antarctic Macquarie Island.

These high-quality datasets will be used to inform the development of a long-term monitoring strategy to protect priority wildlife populations and inform management initiatives.

These data will contribute to the publication of high-quality scientific outputs by the project team and deliver on both State and Federal Government legislative requirements such as threatened species recovery plans and international conservation agreements.

Field assistants will use a range of survey methods including ground surveys and remote sensing techniques to estimate population sizes, spatial distribution and breeding success of priority seabirds and seal species.

They will also be responsible for the collection and curation of samples and field data and prepare progress updates and reports for the project team.

The research will be carried out under guidance from and in collaboration with colleagues from the Marine Conservation Program and Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service (NRE), Queensland University of Technology and the Australian Antarctic Division.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Use a range of population survey methods, including ground surveys, drone (RePL) and remote sensing techniques, to estimate population sizes, spatial distribution and breeding success of priority seabird and seal species breeding on Macquarie Island.
  • Spend approximately six months based on Macquarie Island as part of a small field team (24 people) and live as part of the small island community as an expeditioner with the Australian Antarctic Program.
  • Prepare and plan field trips, including preparation of field equipment, hut bookings, field trip approvals, and adhering to ethics and scientific permit conditions.
  • Collect and curate biological samples and maintain and enter field data following established protocols.
  • Provide regular updates to the project team in Hobart and undertake end of season field reporting.

Your Application

  • Experience carrying out population surveys of seabirds and seals using a range of methods, including ground surveys, markrecapture, drone, and other remote sensing technologies.
  • A strong knowledge of ecological principles, wildlife management and experience undertaking scientific research.
  • Ability to follow strict field protocols for data collection, maintain and curate field and sample data and ensure a good attention to detail.
  • Capacity to work effectively and harmoniously in small field teams or autonomously with limited supervision and have a strong work ethic and motivation for field work.
  • A high level of fitness and a demonstrated ability to work in cold and remote environments, walking across rough terrain and steep slopes carrying a pack for long periods exposed to inclement weather (ideally with prior Antarctic or Sub-Antarctic experience).

Remuneration

Appointment to this role will be at Research Assistant Level 3 and will have a total remuneration package of up to $94,653 comprising base salary of $80,900 plus 17% superannuation.
