Working within Victoria Police's Media Communications and Engagement Department, the Media Advisor will work within a team providing timely and accurate information in response to incidents and issues involving Victoria Police.

No two days will be identical as you act as the liaison between frontline police, other emergency services, and media organisations when responding to media inquiries or promoting the good work of operational police.

As part of the team you may be required to represent Victoria Police on live radio one second and attend a major incident as a media liaison the next.

The selected applicant will assist in conducting media conferences, act as spokesperson for Victoria Police as required, and provide advice and assistance to police members regarding the release of information to the public.

The Victoria Police Media Unit operates 24hrs a day, 7 days a week.

Therefore, the successful applicant will be required to perform regular shift work, including night shift, weekends, and public holidays - this is one of the most challenging aspects of this role so please consider it carefully.

Your duties will include:


  • Liaising with journalists
  • Writing media releases, talking points and media responses
  • Developing and implementing communication plans
  • Providing advice to police on media matters
  • Responding to media enquiries in a timely manner
  • Acting as spokesperson for Victoria Police

As the successful applicant, you will have:

  • Well established journalistic and/or public relations experience
  • Excellent written and oral presentation skills
  • The ability to develop and implement proactive media programs and strategies
  • A relevant tertiary qualification in public relations, communications, journalism or related field would be highly regarded
  • Ability to work in a busy highpressure environment

Requirements and relevant information:


  • One (1) x fulltime, fixed term to 18 August 2023 available.
  • This position is located at Victoria Police Centre, 311 Spencer Street, Docklands.
  • Applicants must be an Australian Citizen, Permanent Resident or hold a valid work permit or visa.
  • The successful applicant will be required to undergo preemployment checks which may include fingerprint checks and misconduct screening.
