The Company

The Role

Melbourne Water are increasing their capability in house to deliver on their goals to provide greater innovation and improvement to the planning and management of assets that enhances the life and liveability of communities.

The TUFLOW Flood Modelling Specialist role is a critical position that will:

  • Set and maintain Melbourne Water's flood modelling standards
  • Appraise and advise on flood modelling approaches for major infrastructure projects
  • Investigate and assess flood event contributing factors
  • Build key industry partnerships and provide guidance to the many flood practitioners at Melbourne Water


Additionally the role will support delivery of the Flood Management Strategy for Port Phillip and Westernport, ensuring that "the right information is available at the right time to the people who need it" across the areas of development planning and flood mitigation.

As a specialist within Melbourne Water, the role will provide essential technical support and guidance to other senior leaders and executive teams.


Required Experience

  • Tertiary qualifications in civil / environmental engineering, environmental science, or related technical discipline with at least 10 years' professional experience.
  • Highly developed flood modelling skills.
  • An understanding of the use and operation of hydrological and hydraulic software such as RORB, XP-Storm, Mike 11, HEC-RAS, TUFLOW, XP2D, PC-Convey and GIS software is beneficial.
  • Knowledge of the impact of climate change on flood modelling practices.
  • Development and maturing of key industry relationships and internal networks.
  • Experience in project and/or program management.
  • Experience with and/or knowledge of Local Government planning processes with respect to flood inundation and special building overlay advice is advantageous.
  • A keen interest in R&D and the willingness to embrace new thinking and technology including Artificial Intelligence (AI).
