In November 2019, the Minister for Education announced the $1.2 million pilot to be jointly funded by DET and the Ian Potter Foundation.

The pilot will take place in 10 primary schools in the North West Victoria Region, including five regional schools and will increase the expertise and confidence of teachers in supporting children with emerging or established behavioural or social-emotional concerns.

As part of the pilot, a new

The MHWL will receive evidence-based training and resources as part of the pilot project.

The MHWL will have a strong focus on building the capability of the whole school.

MCRI and the Department will be testing the MHWL model through a research project within pilot schools to inform future policy.

  • Create a clear pathway for referrals for students identified as requiring further assessment and intervention within the school and to external communitybased services, and use these referral pathways to further support linkages between primary schools and community services;
  • Proactively work with regional staff (i.e. Student Support Services), school wellbeing team, and other health professionals to engage appropriate mental health support as required;
  • Be responsible for implementing whole school approaches to mental health and wellbeing, including the social and emotional learning curriculum;
