This position plays an important role within the Identity and Access Management (IAM) team in the IT Cyber department.

The person in this role will provide technical services within an operational team to manage a modern IAM framework - a set of business processes, policies, governance, and supporting technologies that enable appropriate and timely creation, maintenance, and use of digital identities.

The Specialist - Identity & Access Management Engineer for Privileged Access Management (PAM) will provide technical services, guidance, and stewardship in accordance with the scope of work identified, agreed, and signed off by the Senior Specialist - IAM Lead Engineer.

This role includes the chance to learn a broad set of new technologies with a focus on Microsoft's Azure Active Directory.

Training opportunities including brand-specific PAM training, self-paced 'LinkedIn Learning' and 'Microsoft Skills Initiative'.


Specific accountabilities for this role include:

  • Administer the Privileged Access Management (PAM) system and Password Vault and manage any issues that arise.
  • Investigate underlying causes for tickets (issues/requests/problems) and make recommendations to adjust Identityrelated technical configuration, processes, governance and/or policy as appropriate.
  • Resolve Identityrelated tickets (issues/requests/problems) raised in UNSW's Service Management system, including; MidPoint Identity Provisioning system, UNSW Identity Manager selfservice password portal, Azure Active Directory, Azure MFA and Active Directory.
  • JAVA development (including JEE Web Services, code deployment processes) to support a small number of bespoke / off the shelf systems related to IAM.
  • Effective communication with customers, ensuring a high level of customer service is provided when resolving tickets (issues/requests/problems).
  • Contribute to the design and development of Identity and Access Management (IAM) solutions, from conceptual, logical, and physical design to meet business and technical requirements leveraging architecture patterns and following development processes.
  • Develop, review and update documentation, including designs, configuration, procedures, guides, and other documentation required to support IAM Solutions.
  • Continue to keep wellinformed and up to date in learning new programming languages, frameworks, and paradigms.
  • Align with and actively demonstrate the UNSW Values in Action: Our Behaviours and the UNSW Code of Conduct.
  • Cooperate with all health and safety policies and procedures of the university and take all reasonable care to ensure that your actions or omissions do not impact on the health & safety of yourself or others.

Your skills and experience:


  • Relevant tertiary qualification with subsequent relevant experience or equivalent competence gained through any combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Knowledge of Privileged Access Management (PAM), Password Vaults, Azure AD, Active Directory, and Federation Services is highly desirable.
  • Experience in development and specifically development for Identity Management solutions, enhancing custom connectors and workflows for IAM product.
  • Proficiency in JAVA development (including JEE Web Services and code deployment processes). Knowledge of CI/CD. Working experience in Git Hub, and Jenkins (or Bamboo).
  • Demonstrated experience troubleshooting IAM Solutions in a production environment.
  • Proven experience facing the challenges of building software as a service, including deploying and maintaining software at scale.
  • Knowledge of Single Sign-On (SSO) protocols, including OAuth2.0, OpenID Connect (OIDC) and SAML is advantageous.
  • Familiar with PowerShell script development to support task automation is desirable
  • Understanding of key IT/Cybersecurity concepts (Identity and Access Management, Network Security, Security Operations & Administration, Incident Response & Recovery, Vulnerability Management etc).
  • Strong creative and innovative problemsolving skills, with a willingness to take responsibility for the software design/develop all the way to Production.
  • Comprehensive analytical and problemsolving skills and proven capacity to exercise initiative, flexibility and to be proactive in development of robust solutions to problems.
  • Advanced written and verbal communication skills, with a high level of attention to detail for deliverables produced.
  • Demonstrated success working effectively and collaboratively on initiatives with a range of people at different levels within an organisation.
