About the Portfolio

The Operations Portfolio enables an integrated, enterprise-wide delivery for best practice student and staff experiences.


The Portfolio incorporates the following business units: Enterprise Projects and Business Performance (EPBP), Communications, People, Information and Technology Services (ITS), Office of the Chief Operating Officer, Procurement and Vietnam Operations.


The Portfolio houses significant drivers and delivery components across the staff and student journeys and enables the overall experience for both groups.

The Portfolio is integral in bringing the RMIT strategy to life, across the globe.

Each of these functions supports the global operations of the University both directly as well as through its controlled entities.

The Information Technology Services (ITS) function provides RMIT University with current and emerging Technology systems and services.

About the Role


The Planning and Operations Manager is responsible for providing high-level support and advice to the Office of the CIO and operations of the ITS Function.

The role manages the effective planning and management of resources and operations and provides independent advice, critical business support and project management to strengthen the Technology Function's effectiveness and efficiency.


The incumbent will lead and manage the Function's operational activities, specifically financial (in conjunction with the Finance Business Partner), planning, performance, monitoring, and reporting, and lead cultural and work practice changes required to support the function's strategic directions.

The role must contribute to improvement ideas, identify gaps/inefficiencies, and propose improvement solutions to the delivery practices and working methods.

About You


You will be an independent go-getter with a strategic mindset and ability to interpret data and communicate essential findings to senior stakeholders.

You'll be adaptable and ready to step into a leadership position, focusing on the big picture and continuous improvement.

To be successful in this position, you'll have, as a minimum:

  • Demonstrated experience in the development, interpretation and implementation of budget and financial management.
  • Significant leadership skills, including the capacity to initiate, lead, and manage in a challenging and dynamic environment and to provide strategic advice and support.
  • Demonstrated experience managing and delivering services within a large, complex organisation.
  • Expertise in the areas of planning, change management and project delivery. Experience working in an agile, scrum and lean environment would be an advantage.
  • Provide high-level strategic advice to the Office of the CIO and the wider Leadership team for decision-making related to finance, budgets, and planning across the Function.
  • Demonstrated experience with managing, leading and developing a team.
  • Demonstrated experience and expertise in managing and delivering services within a complex organisation, preferably in the tertiary education sector.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing, interpreting, and implementing budget and financial management.
  • Highly developed analytical and data analysis skills in resourcing, budgeting, and scheduling.
  • Demonstrated expertise in planning, change management, and project delivery.
  • Previous experience working with teams or Managers in an agile, scrum and lean environment would be an advantage.
  • Demonstrated high-level problem-solving and analytical ability to identify improvement opportunities.
  • High-level interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to lead, direct and influence others, including a proven capacity to build and maintain effective and productive relationships with various internal and external groups.
  • Ability to work cooperatively as a member of a team to achieve identified goals.
  • Demonstrate high competency and Microsoft skills to support the position's accountabilities.
  • Executive-level report writing and data visualization skills.
