Your contributionAs an Environmental Officer, you will work with others within a team that provides targeted, consistent and transparent regulation to support sustainable development in the region.

The team proactively manages and monitors environmental risks through the department's modern and innovative regulatory framework.

Environmental management issues include those impacting on land, air, water and people and include coastal development, mining, industrial activities (heavy industry and port operations), commercial activities, air pollution, noise pollution, and waste management.

Environmental Officers identify environmental risks and contribute to the implementation of environmental protection strategies whilst promoting compliance.

Your roleAs the Environmental Officer you will:

  • Participate in site inspections including planning and conducting site inspections, assisting in gathering evidence to support enforcement actions, and making recommendations to management on environmental issues. Respond to and investigate environmental complaints and environmental incidents to achieve environmental outcomes. Participate in an after-hours on call roster for a continuous seven-day (week) period, for a total of at least 4 weeks per year. Communicate, consult, liaise, advise and negotiate with community groups, industry, the general public, and all levels of government on environmental issues. Prepare written correspondence for a variety of audiences including briefing notes, reports, statutory notices, departmental alerts and information documents. Actively participate in team planning, discussions and debriefings; and Carry out duties consistent with contemporary Administrative Decision Making Principles (training provided by the department). Foster a workplace culture that supports and promotes the interests of First Nations people and actively engage through our work to contribute to better outcomes for First Nations people.

This position requires:

  • An understanding of the principles and practices of environmental management through regulation and compliance activities;
  • An understanding of the basic investigative process with regard to environmental compliance, including the process for the collection of evidence;
  • An ability to deliver clear and concise environmental messages to a variety of audiences to educate, advise and achieve outcomes for all parties;
  • An ability to research, review, analyse, interpret information and prepare reports, papers and correspondence targeted to a range of audiences;
  • An ability to participate and support others in a team
  • Contribution to workplace equity and diversity that enriches our culture of innovation, respect and inclusion.
