The Australian National Maritime Museum (ANMM) are seeking a highly energised, vibrant, and dynamic leader to join our team as the Head of Strategic Communications.

This position is the Museum's expert on internal and external strategic communications, reputation management and public relations.

It is responsible for the development, implementation and management of the Museums communications strategy to build, promote and defend its reputation as a leading cultural institution and to elevate the Museum's profile, brand and revenue through cost-effective communications and publicity.


High level overview of responsibilities:


  • Strategic leadership of the Museum's Communications function through the provision of highlevel advice, analysis and support to the Director, Museum Council and Executive on promoting the museum's mission, protecting and enhancing its national and international reputation and sharing its strategic priorities with media and key stakeholders.
  • Development and implementation of an external communications strategy, implementation plans and budgets for the Museum, including development and implementation of strategies to maintain and enhance the Director's and the Museum's national and international profile and building an extensive international cultural network.
  • Oversight and management of publicity, reputational risks and issues management, including proactive identification and mitigation of reputational risks relating to the Director's or Museum activities, exhibitions and commercial activities, program of capital works and commercialisation strategies or other initiatives where the Museum's reputation is preeminent.
  • Research, craft, and edit high quality/high impact speeches, talking points, and video scripts for the Director and Deputy Director to deliver at a variety of events.

Ideally, you will have:


  • Tertiary qualifications in media, communications or equivalent.
  • Broad experience working in media and/or public affairs (Minimum 10 years) with demonstrated capacity to deliver strong results
  • Indepth understanding of a national museum, its role and significance.
  • Supervisory responsibilities accountable for supervising multidisciplinary teams of consultants and contractors to achieve defined deliverables to a high level of performance.
