We are the main provider of health services to people living in the inner southeast suburbs of Melbourne, from ambulatory to inpatient and home and community-based services.

The Alfred is home to one of Victoria's most comprehensive gastroenterology services.

The Alfred Gastroenterology Department is responsible for the diagnosis and treatment of patients with suspected or established gastrointestinal and liver disease including the appropriate utilisation of diagnostic and therapeutic gastrointestinal endoscopy.

Clientele include inpatients admitted electively or via the Emergency Department directly to the Gastroenterology Unit or referred for investigation and management from other Units within The Alfred, as well as outpatients managed in the Hepatitis, General Liver, Fatty Liver, Hepatoma, General Gastroenterology, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Coeliac, PEG and Endoscopy Clinics.


The Department prides itself on the provision of high-quality inpatient and ambulatory care of acute and chronic illness in highly specialised clinics.

The Hepatology Fellowship is a one-year appointment during which the Fellow will engage in clinical, procedural and research activities. The Hepatology Fellow is supported by three full-time hepatologists and several visiting medical officers in the Unit.

The Fellow is engaged in several clinical and research activities including:


  • In conjunction with the Gastroenterology Registrars and Residents oversee and facilitate the optimal management of inpatients with acute and chronic liver disease
  • Attend and provide input at weekly Liver, Hepatitis, Fatty Liver, Liver Research and HCC Clinics (including postclinic audits
  • Assist the HCC Nurse Consultant to manage patients with liver cancer
  • Assist research staff in the management of clinical research and trial patients
  • Assist the Hepatology Nurses in the organisation of multidisciplinary meetings
  • Undertake training in liver Fibroscan and portal pressure measurement
  • Be available for oncall duties for ward patients and endoscopy one week in five
  • Develop and update protocols and guidelines for management of specific liver diseases as required.
  • Participate in educational/research meetings at The Alfred
  • Weekly educational seminar
  • Weekly Journal Club
  • Regular research meetings
  • Attend weekly inpatient audit, histopathology MDM, radiology review meetings
  • Teach and supervise Junior medical staff in the management of patients with liver disorders
  • Perform research projects under the direction of the Supervisors
  • Attend & participate in local/national educational meetings in Gastroenterology/Hepatology
  • Perform (when credentialed) upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopy.
