We are looking for a
Superintendent Structural Geology to provide leadership, mentorship, and coaching to the Structural Geology team in Rio Tinto Iron Ore (RTIO).

The Structural Geology team is an enthusiastic group of specialist structural geologists who collect, process, and analyse structural data, as well as produce structural geology 3D models as a direct input into resource geology models and geotechnical designs across different phases of studies to operations, across our iron ore portfolio in the Pilbara, WA.


The team is within the Planning, Integration and Assets (PIA) division, and Geotechnical Department, which is accountable for developing and planning resource extraction, safely and at the right cost for our Iron Ore business.


This role is a great opportunity to be a part of strong technical team managing and minimising geotechnical risk through the collection, analysis, and modelling of structural data.

Reporting to the Manager Geotechnical, you remit will include but not be limited to:


  • Leading the structural geology team in the collection (e.g. pit mapping and structural drilling), collation, validation, analysis, interpretation and storage of accurate structural geology information.
  • Leading the structural geology team in the provision (produced inhouse or in collaboration with Resource Development
  • Geology Modelling Group) of structural geology models for input into geotechnical design recommendations for all mine designs (Studies and Operational).
  • The technical quality and peer review of pit mapping, structural geology analysis products and 3D models.
  • Facilitating the interaction between all geoscience/geotechnical stakeholders within RTIO, in particular: Geotechnical Design Team, Mine Technical Services Geotechnical, and Resource Development
  • Geology Modelling Group.
  • Provide the strategic vision for the best practice, fit for purpose structural geology data collection/validation methods, structural analysis, and modelling practices, as a critical input into geotechnical designs.

What you will need for this role

  • BSc, BEng Earth Science and/or relevant Engineering Degree is essential
  • Current WA " C Class" Driver's License
  • Experience with Vulcan (or similar), Leapfrog, Photogrammetry platforms, and (Arc)GIS software will be seen as advantageous
  • A proven track record of success in a similar leadership position with the proven ability to lead, coach and mentor technical team members
  • Structural geology mapping/analysis/modelling experience
  • Demonstrated communication skills, including an ability to build relationships
  • Excellent writing skills, and an ability to problem solve in a timely manner
