About the Opportunity


We are seeking a motivated Laboratory Technician to provides quality service for testing a large range of pathogens on samples derived from all over Australia and New Zealand.

You will be working as a member of a dedicated team of people including veterinarians, scientists, and technicians.


Key Responsibilities of Laboratory Technician

  • Assisting sample specimen reception process, checking of submission content and paperwork and identify any discrepancies in the submission.
  • Logging submissions in the reception book.
  • Organize paperwork and entering submission into Laboratory information management system.
  • Distribution of samples and paperwork to appropriate sections
  • Labelling and preparing samples for testing laboratory.
  • Conducting nucleic acid extraction and perform a large range of pathogens testing by polymerase chain reaction, reversetranscriptionPCR and sequencing.
  • Assisting results analysis and entry.
  • Support samples archiving process, storage of positive sample and prepare positive control.
  • Maintenance and documentation, including equipment maintenance and general cleaning of work areas.
  • Assist the Section supervisor in coordinating the activities of the Testing Section by managing caseload.
  • Maintain adequate stocks of reagents and consumables.
  • Assist in reagent, buffer and consumable preparation.
  • Assist in disposal duties for general, recycle and medical/hazard/biosecurity waste.
  • Washing of glassware, preparation of consumables for autoclaving.
  • Contribute to research programs and assisting improvement to services.
  • Contribute to a safe work environment by following safety procedures, and maintaining the laboratory and office area in a clean and orderly manner and other areas associated with good work and laboratory practices

Ideal Qualifications, Skills & Experience

  • Degree in Biotechnology/ Biochemistry/Molecular biology (BSc or related area
  • Experience in the operation of automatic nucleic acid purification system or manual extraction kits, realtime PCR instruments, sequencing, gel analysis and interpretation of results is desirable.
  • Practical and relevant experience in a diagnostic pathology laboratory would be advantageous.
  • An outstanding work ethic with a positive 'can do' attitude and a desire to exceed customer service expectations by maintaining our commitment to service excellence.
  • Ability to work under pressure.
  • Exceptional attention to details and excellent time management skills.
  • Ability to adapt to change, to be able to work with a dynamic team.
  • Ability to follow established procedures and follow through instructions.
  • Sound organisational skills including the ability to multitask and prioritise work.
  • Demonstrated ability to work unsupervised with a high degree of accuracy and precision.
  • It would be preferable if you hold a current Australian Driver license.
