The Role

The APS 4 Technician - Marine will be required to share information, monitor work practices, set work priorities and develop local procedures.

They may supervise and provide leadership to a team, providing coaching and on-the-job training for newer and less experienced team members.


The APS 4 Technician - Marine may be required to communicate with, respond and provide advice to a range of stakeholders on straightforward operational and administrative issues to achieve work unit and Defence outcomes.

They will be accountable to contribute towards ongoing self-improvement and professional development.
Marine occupation in Defence includes the following (note: not all duties are required to be performed during a 12 month performance cycle):

  • Perform straightforward marine technical activities and associated tasks working to agreed priorities and outcomes.
  • Accountable for exercising assigned technical authorities and any Technical Regulatory Authority delegations.
  • Conduct investigations and contribute to the development of technical documentation for review.
  • Build and sustain positive relationships with team members and actively participate in team work and group activities.
  • Work collaboratively and operate as an effective team member.
  • Possess the ability to work autonomously.
  • Investigate technical packages and participate in the scoping, planning and reviewing of packages.
  • Assess technical packages, reports, processes and product and equipment performance to meet specified requirements, provide recommendations for continuous improvement and implement corrective actions.
  • Understand and ensure safety aspects of Defence capability are considered and incorporated into marine technical activities and tasks.
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of technical knowledge of relevant packages, processes, product and equipment.

About our Team

The work of the Marine sub-function in Defence: provide technical marine knowledge and advice, engaging with stakeholders to deliver and exercise appropriate technical delegations in line with relevant legislative, policy and regulatory frameworks.

Investigate, report and perform technical marine assessments that support Defence materiel capability life cycle.


Within the Marine sub-function an APS4 Technician - Marine is accountable under routine direction to perform and achieve straightforward technical marine work within an integrated workforce.

They are accountable to have a good understanding of and compliance to relevant legislative frameworks, government decision-making and Defence's mission and policy requirements.


An APS4 Technician - Marine will be accountable for organising their workflow, making decisions within their defined parameters relating to area of responsibility and will seek guidance when required.

They may exercise some discretion with respect to how legislation, procedures and guidelines are interpreted and applied to their work.

They will provide specialist or administrative support that is informed and directed by their knowledge of the marine sub-function. They may undertake some research and analysis activities.
