Calling Advanced Emergency Medicine Trainees for Special Skill Placement in Emergency Medicine Ultrasound for 2023

FRANKSTON HOSPITAL - SPECIAL SKILLS PLACEMENT - ULTRASOUND


Peninsula Health is currently recruiting ACEM advanced trainees interested in further development in emergency and critical care ultrasonography for 2023.

Ideal opportunity to develop your skills in emergency and critical care ultrasonography, supervised by a highly-qualified team of point-of-care ultrasound experts through an accredited position for training with The Australasian College for Emergency Medicine.


ED Special Skills Placement in Ultrasound - Overview


The successful appointee with commence a Special Skills Placement in ultrasound is a full-time six-month placement, fully accredited with ACEM since 2018.

You will be under the supervision and guidance of a core group of FACEMs with advanced skills in ultrasound and a passion for POCUS education.

During the first three months you will gain proficiency in image acquisition across all core ED POCUS modalities. This will be followed by a further three months of consolidation, exploration into advanced modalities, and logbook completion.

Over the six months, there will be ample time to complete logbook requirements for ASUM CCPU and/or the new ACEM program.

You will also be expected to complete a project, co-designed with the ultrasound education team, with potential for subsequent conference presentations and publications.

This role will be suitable to advanced trainees who have completed the college exam requirement and want to work in develop further skills in emergency medicine ultrasonography in a dynamic department with a diverse and interesting casemix.


Position description
ED Special Skills Placement in Ultrasound - Position Summary

  • This accredited placement will facilitate a structured approach to knowledge and skill acquisition, through a variety of activities including practical and online teaching under full supervision of the ultrasound Special Skill supervisor and consultants.
  • All scans will be recorded in a logbook and recorded. Regular formal case reviews, supervisor meetings and journal clubs will be conducted. It is expected that trainees attended registrar teaching, including statewide meetings.
  • The placement includes clinical duties with one in three weekends. The clinical duty time allows completion of the basic CCPU units of AAA, EFAST, BELS and lung ultrasound.

Frankston is 42 km or less than 1 hour drive from the City centre and is the gateway to the Mornington Peninsula.

This is both a popular holiday destination has beautiful beaches, calm waters in the bay, surf beaches, wineries, golf courses, but also has a vibrant community.

Rosebud is a smaller Community hospital nestled in the heart of the Peninsula, perfectly positioned directly opposite the beach. EMR, bed management and all clinical systems are fully integrated between the two departments.

The ED has access to a comprehensive range of acute medical, surgical, geriatric, psychiatric, obstetric, gynaecological and paediatric services on site.

All the major imaging modalities are on site.

The $1.1 billion redevelopment of Frankston Hospital will deliver a new 12-storey clinical services tower and main entrance, 130 more beds, new spaces for mental health and oncology services and 15 new operating theatres.

Construction is underway, with main works expected to be completed in 2025. A new dedicated Paediatric Emergency Department and Crisis Hub is being built as part of the redevelopment.

The Department of Emergency Medicine


The Emergency Services currently treats over 100,000 patients per annum between the Frankston and Rosebud campuses, with 25% paediatric presentations.

Both departments have active Emergency Short Stay units with a total of 40 beds across both sites and a further 10 beds planned as part of the current Frankston Hospital redevelopment.

The admission rate is about 40%, with a diverse and high acuity casemix.
There are currently 45 consultants working in the Emergency Department across both sites including 3 ACEM examiners.
