THE COLLEGE

APPOINTMENT

  • The
    Laboratory Technician is appointed by the CEO and Executive Principal, responsible to the Principal and reports to the Head of Department
  • Science and Maths.
  • The position is part time, termtime plus 2 weeks,6 hours a day (inclusive of a 30minute unpaid lunch), 8.30amto2.30pm Monday to Friday.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIE

  • Liaise with science teaching staff on their needs for practical work and maintain an efficient system for use and allocation of materials and equipment, setting a priority system where necessary
  • Assist science teaching staff with demonstrations under the guidance of the teacher.
  • Assist science teaching staff in instructing students on use/care of equipment.
  • Advise and assist science teaching staff in safety matters relating to the science laboratory.
  • Demonstrate laboratory techniques to science teaching staff/students.
  • Set out equipment and materials for classroom/department use.
  • Prepare solutions, stains, and media for use in the laboratory.
  • Maintain a safe chemical storage/handling/disposal system in accordance with current regulations.
  • Assist with security of science laboratory and equipment.
  • Maintain an inventory of equipment, chemicals and annual stocktaking.
  • Keep a record of the consumables used regularly and maintain adequate supplies of them (including chemicals).
  • Assist with STEM week preparations and play a role for the college's STEM night.
  • Acquire relevant catalogues and price lists.
  • Order equipment and chemicals in consultation with Science teachers.
  • Keep appropriate records of purchases, confirming safe arrival of all products.
  • Gather glassware/general equipment for laboratory use.
  • Service, calibrate and clean laboratory apparatus/equipment.
  • Develop maintenance procedures for laboratory equipment and organise maintenance where required.
  • Report damages to equipment and arrange repairs.
  • Conduct safety audits for the laboratories.
  • Maintain clean and organised Science Laboratories.
  • Care for flora and fauna within the science department, in accordance with current handling and prevention of cruelty regulations.
  • Collect and maintain living specimens (in accordance with regulations).
  • Collect offcampus scientific materials and field materials.
  • Maintain MSDS/RAS records.
  • Liaise with organisations and industries for purpose of acquiring equipment, regarding excursions and use of materials.
  • Liaise with other schools to share resources.
  • Assist with the development of operational, OH&S and budgetary policy within the science department.
  • Be capable with the use of online programs such as RiskAssess and Chemwatch.

SKILLS AND EXPECTATION

  • Excellent knowledge of materials used in science curriculum;
  • A sound knowledge of scientific procedures and laboratory practices suited to the school environment;
  • Proven ability to prioritise, demonstrate initiative and take a proactive and flexible approach to tasks;
  • Ability to work as a member of a team in a manner that fosters the support and cooperation of team members;
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to successfully engage a range of stakeholders;
  • Ability to work autonomously once tasks are delegated;
  • Ability to work calmly under pressure and provide good role modelling to students, by showing support and guidance in a classroom setting.
  • Actively contribute to a safety citizenship culture upholding health and safety policies, procedures, hazard reporting and safe work practices.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • Postsecondary qualifications in a science related field e

g:
Science degree, Diploma of Laboratory Technology, or certificate IV in laboratory Techniques.


CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

  • Working with Children Suitability Card is essential.
  • First Aid training

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Office and classroom environments with some travel accompanying students around and off campus for excursions.
  • Procure supplies from local businesses within the community. This may entail employees travelling to collect necessary items

CONDITIONS AND SALARY

  • This is a parttime termtime plus 2 week position, School Officer Level 4 as per the Moreton Bay Boys' College Enterprise Agreement.
  • Sick Leave entitlement of prorata 10 days annually.
  • Long Service Leave entitlement of prorata 1.3 weeks for each year of service, which can be taken after 7 years.
  • The College contributes superannuation on behalf of the employee as per the Moreton Bay Enterprise Agreement.
