The role:


The Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute maintains facilities for genetically modified rodents, where a high quality of animal care is coupled with excellent services for research.


As an Animal Technician, you will work as part of a skilled and dedicated animal care team who use the latest technology in housing and equipment to provide support for research into cardiac disease and development.


In particular, the Animal Technician will be responsible for providing professional care (husbandry, breeding, cleaning cages and equipment) for all animal species where mice and rats are the major species, but also involving duties in the aquaria housing zebrafish and aquatic frogs.


This is a permanent, full-time role on a 7-day rotating roster, therefore availability on some weekends and public holidays is required to ensure the continuity of care for animals in the facility.


What we will trust you with:

  • Collaborating with IT and science teams to evaluate and identify optimal cloud solutions.
  • Professional animal care including provision of food, water and clean housing materials
  • Animal husbandry including management of breeding colonies
  • Liaising with researchers to optimise the health and welfare of animals under study
  • Maintenance and operation of washing and sterilising equipment
  • Maintenance of clean environments, including materials and equipment
  • Compliance with regulations concerning animal ethics, gene technology, quarantine, and Work, Health & Safety
  • Accurate recordkeeping and administrative responsibilities, such as breeding, sample submission and animal usage
  • Assist research staff with animal issuance, handling and experimental procedures as directed by senior BioCORE staff.
  • Restock consumables and maintain procedure rooms.
  • Perform euthanasia, as required

Does this sound like you?:


  • Currently possess or studying towards tertiary qualifications in laboratory animal science, animal technology, biological science, vet nursing, animal husbandry or a related field
  • Prior experience working in animal research facilities
  • Ability to work individually or as part of a team
  • Effective time management
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to interact and maintain good relationships with diverse members of an organisation.
  • Genuine interest in working with rodents/small animals with a caring approach
  • Availability on weekends and public holidays
  • Australian Citizenship or Permanent Residency
