As the primary contact for disclosures of sexual harm, family violence and behaviours of concern the Adviser, Safer Community uses critical judgement to make risk assessments and triage complex disclosures, ensuring boundaries are in place, and referring on to the relevant support services where appropriate.

In this role you will be responsible for developing safety plans, communications plans and supporting students to engage in behavioural change where appropriate.

This role works with stakeholders from across the university to ensure the wellbeing and safety of students, staff and the broader university community.


Safer Community operates between the hours of 9am and 4pm, Monday to Friday and is not an emergency response service.

The position will undertake intake, triage, screening, assessment, management, closure and review of cases.


As an Adviser, Safer Community you will:

  • Take carriage of the Safer Community Duty Line including intake, triage, screening and risk assessment of incoming cases in a high volume and fast paced environment.
  • Distil complex information and implement practical, accessible solutions based on stakeholder needs.
  • Provide clear advice and referral based on an indepth understanding of relevant Deakin policies and procedures.
  • Consult regularly with stakeholders to clarify who requires the information, the purpose for which it is required and criteria for success.
  • Plan and prioritises work and critical activities appropriately and recognise barriers to achieving outcomes, finding effective ways to deal with barriers and evaluates progress.
  • Record cases in the Safer Community Complex Case Management system in a timely manner

To be successful, you'll have:


  • A Degree with subsequent relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training such as in the field of forensic behavioural science, clinical or forensic psychology or social work, law enforcement, security, law or related disciplines.
  • Training and awareness of responding to disclosure of sexual harm, family and domestic violence and child safety matters.
  • Experience of working in a complex organisation with multiple policies, procedures and operating practices with the ability to interpret these policies and procedures.
  • Experience in responding to people from diverse backgrounds that may be in crisis, distressed or experiencing mental ill‐health.
  • Experience in determining level of concern, risk or threat and development of an effective management plan.
