    A little bit about us
    The Division of Road and Vehicle Safety aims to improve road safety and reduce road trauma.

    The division has three main functions; setting the policy direction for road safety through the National Road Safety Strategy , develop and maintain the Road Vehicle Standards (RVS) legislation, including the national road vehicle standards also known as the Australian Design Rules (ADRs), and regulating the first provision of vehicles in Australia to ensure they meet safety and environmental expectations of the Australian community.

    The Vehicle Safety Policy and Partnerships Branch is responsible for driving the development and implementation of legislation, procedures, guidelines, and systems for the RVS legislation.

    The Vehicle Standards section develops and maintains the ADRs.

    It supports the Department's delivery of the National Road Safety Strategy in relation to vehicle safety and contributes in national and international forums focused on vehicle safety and standards.

    You will be encouraged to hone your expertise by representing the department in national and international forums and conferences held with engineering, government or scientific experts on vehicle safety.

    A typical work week for a vehicle standards engineer/technical officer/scientist may involve:
    Analyse and effectively communicate a variety of technical and policy documents such as developing Regulation Impact Statements or Impact Analysis[1]in support of developing vehicle safety standards and associated benefit cost analyses
    Develop research and policy positions, which may include:Analyse datasets to identify trends
    Conduct research into the effectiveness of vehicle safety technologiesDraft and amend technical legislative instruments including the ADRs
    Respond to complex national and international standards issues
    Contribute and participate in meetings about technical vehicle issues with other colleagues and local and international experts

    If you have a background in science, engineering, trade, STEM or other technical field and want to improve vehicle safety design, we want to hear from you We have positions at the APS6 or APS5 level that will offer you the opportunity to apply your technical expertise to develop vehicle standards and contribute to Australian Government policy for safe vehicles.

    You will work with engineers of various streams, automotive trade specialists and technical officers in our team on vehicle standards development and maintenance projects.

    You will use your excellent written and verbal communication skills in preparing position papers, briefings and developing Australian Design Rules (ADRs).

    You will also have the opportunity to directly engage with key stakeholders such as the light and heavy vehicle industry, vehicle component industry and other governments.

    An APS Level 5 employee would generally be required to undertake work that is moderately complex to complex in nature and operate under limited direction.

    They are accountable for organising their workflow and making independent decisions relating to an area of responsibility.
    Employees at this level provide policy advice within an area of specialisation with advice based on policies and legislation.

    APS5 employees undertake specialist or technical research and analysis, conduct investigations, and undertake procedural, clerical, administrative support or operational tasks.

    An APS Level 6 employee would generally be required to undertake work that is complex in nature, work under limited direction with the opportunity for reasonable autonomy and accountability.

    Employees at this level exercise both initiative and judgment in the interpretation of policy and in the application of practices and procedures.

    APS6 employees provide detailed technical, professional, and/or policy advice in relation to complex problems and may assist in strategic planning, program and project management and policy development.

    While there is a preference for staff to be Canberra based, we are open to Vehicle Standards team members working from other locations in Australia.

    The successful candidate must be able to obtain and/or maintain a security clearance at Baseline Level.

    You must have lived in Australia, or have a checkable background, for at least the preceding five years for Baseline Vetting clearances.
