The National Museum of Australia (NMA) has an exciting opportunity for an experienced creative professional to join the Programs Business Unit (BU) as a Program Coordinator to develop coordinate the delivery of public programs.


The Programs BU develops and delivers a range of public programs, events and activities connected to the NMA's vision, strategy, values, collections and exhibitions.

Designed to engage diverse audiences with opportunities for life-long learning, the NMA's program of high-quality, accessible programs aims to inspire, connect and challenge audiences, building knowledge, curiosity, creativity and empathy.


The Programs team develops audience-focused activities through best practice models, research and innovation; working in consultation and collaboration with colleagues across the NMA, as well as with external partners, stakeholders, professionals and communities.

Programs are primarily delivered at the NMA's Acton site, as well as throughout Australia and internationally, with an emphasis on online innovation.


The opportunity comes as NMA is delivering on a new Strategic Plan and developing a Public Engagement Strategy to better engage audiences, onsite and online.


Position Duties

  • Contributing to the development, delivery and evaluation of creative and interpretive programs and events for diverse audiences, including children and families that effectively build audience engagement.
  • Coordinating projects through planning, production, promotion, event budget development and tracking, risk management; as well as coordinating and supervising staff, volunteers and contractors to support program delivery.
  • Working within a small, dynamic team, be able to work collaboratively with colleagues, with autonomy and accountability for project delivery.
  • Contributing to the development of programs to ensure they are aligned with the Museum's relevant policies and the Museums' strategic priorities for learning and audience engagement.
  • Contributing to the development of programs with a commitment to First Nations engagement, gender equity, cultural and linguistic diversity and accessibility principles.
  • Working collaboratively, and in consultation with, a diverse range of internal stakeholders (including curatorial, development, marketing, commercial and visitor services) and externally with professionals and specialists, artists, community organisations, partners and other cultural institutions.
  • Supervision and development of lower classification levels including building team capacity through mentoring and performance feedback.
  • Maintaining an awareness of current trends in programming both nationally and internationally to ensure that programs are responsive and innovative.
  • Ensuring that you and your team members have sufficient supervision, instruction and equipment to undertake your work safely and efficiently.

Note:
This position will require some work on weeknights, weekends and public holidays. It may also involve some strenuous physical activity.


Selection criteria

  • Proven capacity to coordinate and deliver highquality cultural programs for visitors which interpret cultural collections, exhibitions, or narrative themes such as Australian history, environmental science, First Nations cultures and contemporary issues relevant to the Museum's diverse audiences.
  • Project management skills and experience in the delivery of engaging cultural experiences including programs, events and workshops; experience in effectively managing contractors; and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Demonstrated experience working within a team environment, and client liaison and customer service skills; including the ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, diverse professionals, community and cultural organisations and corporate partners.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with a demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with cultural audiences, stakeholders and professionals from a range of backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, and a demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and sensitively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
  • Desirable_
  • Relevant tertiary or industry qualifications to support your ability to perform, including the humanities, particularly Australian History, education, museum studies or visual arts; events management; film, theatre and broadcast production.
