The role
We are looking for multiple Hitchhiker Surveillance Officers in Sydney. This is a Temporary Full-Time position until June 2025.

This position will work as part of the Hitchhiker Surveillance team, locally and nationally, to undertake and support surveillance activity, with key duties including, but not limited to:

  • Assess biosecurity risk pathways at importer premises (or other relevant premises) and plan field surveillance for Hitchhiker pests, including liaising with Biosecurity Entry Point and other industry staff to schedule surveillance activities when directed,
  • Conduct Hitchhiker surveillance project activities at the border and where appropriate other post border sites/premises,
  • Set and maintain Hitchhiker project monitoring or trapping programs
  • Contribute to collection of accurate and up to date, local surveillance data including the use and maintenance of field surveillance devices and timely (up to date) completion of surveillance records,
  • Conduct routine triage of field samples, and collect, prepare and submit samples to and liaise with diagnosticians to obtain accurate and timely pest identifications.
  • Contribute to pest status reporting
  • Ensure surveillance supplies are in stock including supply management and procuring consumables to enable ongoing surveillance activities, and
  • Ensure compliance with departmental WH&S policies and guidelines and be alert for and reporting risks regarding WH&S issues.
***- Tertiary qualifications in Biological, Environmental Science or agriculture

  • Experience in field surveillance and/or a relevant scientific field such as entomology, botany or plant pathology is highly desirable.
  • Will be required to obtain and maintain a Security Clearance at this level.
