The UDI Project is responsible for implementing a key medical device reform: establishing Australia's Unique Device Identification (UDI) system and assisting its adoption by Australian healthcare.

When implemented, the UDI will enable the tracking of medical devices, specifically, high risk implanted devices such as those in safety crises including hip implants, urogynaecological mesh and breast implants, from the point of supply through to implantation and use.

To deliver this initiative, the UDI Project team is responsible for a broad range of activities including implementing the policy related to these new regulations, building a TGA database for storing UDI data, engaging with sponsors of medical devices, integrating UDI into related processes at the TGA and supporting adoption by the healthcare sector.
