About the Opportunity


As a Welfare Officer, you will play an integral part within the Welfare and Engagement Team and will help to contribute with the overall success of welfare services available to detainees.

You will play a pivotal role in monitoring and supporting health and welfare outcomes for detainees, taking into account and addressing the individual needs and circumstances of detainees, including those with complex physical and/or mental health needs.

What you'll be doing

  • Supporting and interacting with detainees to optimise their personal autonomy and responsibility and normalise their experience as much as possible.
  • Actively safeguard and promote the health and wellbeing of detainees by implementing and delivering guidance.
  • Participating in and undertake reception, induction and orientation activities for detainees as required.
  • Assisting detainees to develop and maintain independence in their personal and health care needs.
  • Organising and maintaining relevant administrative records and systems as per policies or government regulations.
  • Providing support in religious, spiritual, and pastoral care, ensuring detainees are free to practice their religion of choice individually or communally.

About you - Your ideal skills and experience:

  • Experience in associated discipline such as Community Services, Disability Support, Individual Support, Aged Care, Sports Recreation, Learning and Development, Ethnic Affairs. (Certificate III level qualification in an associated discipline is desirable)
  • Hold and maintain HLTAID009 Provide CPR and HLTAID011 Provide First Aid certificates with at least 6 months currency on the certificate.
  • Maintain a current Working with Children certificate in accordance with the relevant state or territory child protection legislation (as required).
  • At least two years' experience in supporting people with high needs, either in a disability service or aged care in a community setting.
  • Experience in managing and conducting structured programs and activities for adults or families.
  • This is a position of trust and responsibility and to support this we will conduct a thorough probity assessment, which includes a Federal police check as an essential selection component for this role._
