Senior leadership role within Swinburne University

  • Full time Fixed Term for 2 years position at our Hawthorn campus

About the
The Manager, Intellectual Property Commercialisation will lead and support activities and provide expertise in the following areas:

  • Best practice in IP portfolio management, including maintaining an up-to-date patent database and reminder systems;
  • Ensuring that IP/ technology assessments are undertaken in high priority research areas and advising on patentability, structuring of patent specifications and patent prosecution;
  • Supporting the creation of business plans for technology commercialisation;
  • Negotiation and documentation of technology commercialisation relationships with external parties;
  • Education of Swinburne staff in IP and commercialisation.
The Manager, Intellectual Property Commercialisation will work closely with colleagues across the Swinburne research and the Commercial innovation ecosystem including:

  • Research staff, especially research leaders and inventors;
  • Swinburne Research teams in the functional areas of major initiatives and proposal development and research contracting and grants management;
  • Research engagement, translation and commercialisation functional areas including Industry Research Engagement Team members and other teams in the Innovation and Enterprise portfolio;
  • Legal office.

About You
To be suitable for this role you will need to have experience in the below key accountabilities:

  • Demonstrated and relevant commercial/legal experience (preferably in the private sector), with some specific practical involvement in technology and/or business systems
  • Understanding of processes for intellectual property capture and protection across key international jurisdictions (especially the countries parties to major treaties and harmonisation initiatives).
  • Ability to work autonomously and in a team
- environment, to develop and implement management processes and to follow through on tasks to completion with mínimal

  • Knowledge of government funding programs (at both state and federal levels) available to facilitate IP commercialisation, industry development and collaboration between industry and research organisations.
  • Understanding of contract research, intellectual property capture and commercialisation processes as conducted in Australian

Qualifications

  • Tertiary qualifications, preferably in law and/or a relevant scientific discipline. Additional intellectual property, patent attorney, business or management qualifications/experience would be highly regarded.
