Where a non-ongoing specified term is offered, this would be for an initial period of up to 12 months, with possibility of extension up to a maximum period of two years.


A non-ongoing offer may result in conversion to an ongoing offer of employment, however this must occur within 18 months from the opening date of this advertisement.

We are seeking a number of highly motivated applicants who are passionate about the Government's social policy agenda to join our Social Policy Group.


Social Policy Group provides policy advice and runs programs across a broad range of areas including: education, universities, youth and early years, health, social and emotional wellbeing, families, women's empowerment, safety, housing and infrastructure.

Roles within the Social Policy Group contribute to work at the heart of the Government's social policy agenda and will give you the opportunity to work in partnership with First Nations people to deliver better outcomes that improve lives.


As a policy and/or program officer you will have the opportunity to influence others, contribute to policy design and implementation, and gain the skills to engage in genuine partnership with a variety of stakeholders.

As the APS4 Policy and/or Program Officer, you will undertake a variety of work including but not limited to:

  • preparing policy and/or program documents for review by senior staff in your team
- supporting your team in relation to policy development and/or program management, including administration support
- liaising with internal and external stakeholders in relation to policy development and/or program management.

As the APS5 Policy and/or Program Officer, you will undertake a variety of work including but not limited to:

  • interpreting and drafting policy and/or program documents for review by senior staff in your team
- contributing to development of policy and/or program documents for review and publication
- providing advice on policy and/or program areas
- liaising with internal and external stakeholders and representing your work area in relation to policy development and/or program management.
- a demonstrated record of working in a culturally sensitive manner, with a commitment to furthering cultural intelligence development
- research skills, including the ability to provide advice based on evidence
- written skills and the ability to deliver briefings and papers
- interpersonal skills, including the ability to develop relationships with stakeholders
- strong organisational skills, to allow them to deliver on time.
- the ability to identify emerging opportunities or issues and respond quickly to competing priorities.

This position is Identified which signifies that the role has a strong involvement in matters relating to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

This position is required to liaise with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, communities and service providers.

You will require cultural competency, including:
- understanding of the matters impacting Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples
- demonstrated ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples
- demonstrated capability and commitment to continue to develop cultural competency
