What you'll do


Manager Data Scientists at VAGO are dynamic, adaptable leaders with the ability to motivate and coach others to achieve their work goals.

They preferably hold a graduate or postgraduate STEM qualification.

Managers are responsible for the delivery of a work program within an allocated business area, which includes audits and business improvement initiatives.


Manager Data Scientists are rigorous and innovative in their approach to work and are motivated by the challenge of promoting continuous improvement in the Victorian public sector.

They create opportunities for others to learn and develop, while actively pursuing their own professional development goals.


This role requires a technical manager with a strong background in quantitative and qualitative analysis, research methods, and data science related fields.

You will play a pivotal role in helping bridge the gap between technical and non-technical staff in the planning and conduct of our audits.

You will also assist audit staff to identify opportunities for the inclusion of data analytics methods within audit topics to increase their impact and value.


Key responsibilities

  • Identify and monitor trends and under guidance, translate them into strategic advice for the team and organisation
  • Contribute to continuous improvement by participating in audit meetings/debriefs and sharing lessons learned
  • Represent and actively promote VAGO and the role of the Auditor-General at external seminars and events
  • Actively support the Lead Data Scientist to monitor and manage the delivery of portfolio and group outputs and outcomes
  • Manage assigned components Data Science deliverables and produce quality work within agreed budgets and timeframes
  • Manage resources (team members and/or external resources), including delegation and monitoring of work
  • In collaboration with audit managers, respond to risk, materiality, public interest perspectives of Data Science deliverables
  • Maintain records and content in VAGO's key systems (e.g. AmP, IPSAM)
  • Establish networks with key stakeholders

Who you are

  • Achievements in the development and implementation of opportunities for improvement in internal and external stakeholder relationships
  • Demonstrated experience assisting leadership to identify emerging threats and opportunities to better target audit activity and enhance the organisation and public sector accountability
  • Uses initiative and sound judgement when managing very complex and highly sensitive projects and issues
  • Demonstrates innovative thinking and actively embraces and paves the way for change
  • Proactively responds to trends, emerging issues, risks and opportunities in data science
  • Leads by example, modelling collegiate, resilient and flexible work behaviours
  • Tertiary qualifications in mathematics, statistics, computer science, physics or other numerical fields, with post graduate level well regarded
  • Several years' experience in data analytics, business intelligence, decision support, operations research, or related roles
