YMAC) is the Native Title Representative Body (
NTRB), delivering native title and other services across the Pilbara, Mid West, Murchison and Gascoyne regions of Western Australia.

YMAC is run by a First Nations board of directors, representing several native title groups, each of whom have their own language, culture, traditions and protocols.


YMAC services include native title claim and future act representation; heritage services; executive office, community, and economic development assistance; land administration, and natural resource management support.

About the Role:


YMAC is currently seeking a full time (75 hours per fortnight) Agreements Officer to join the team in our Perth office.

The primary aim of this role is to process future act negotiations and conduct minor future act matters in collaboration with, and under instruction by, the lawyers in the legal team.


About You:


You will have the ability to work as part of a cohesive and integrated legal team and be committed to achieving real outcomes for First Nations people.

You will have a keen interest in the law, and perhaps may be studying (or want to study) law.

You could also be an experienced legal clerk or paralegal looking to transition to Native Title and gain some first-hand experience.

You will also be able to communicate confidently and empathetically with all levels of staff and external agencies, verbally and in writing.

Selection Criteria:


Experience / Qualifications

  • A tertiary qualification in a relevant field
  • Legal or Heritage (or undertaking study in a relevant field) or at least three years' work experience in an administration / business support / legal clerk / paralegal role.
  • Familiarity with the Native title Act 1993 and other relevant legislation (such as The Mining Act 1978).
  • Experience working in the Native Title Sector, or for an NTRB or PBC.
  • Demonstrated future acts and heritage experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and sensitively with First Nations people or demonstrated capacity to quickly develop that ability.

Skills

  • Demonstrated high level interpersonal skills with the ability to establish and maintain positive and productive relationships with major partners and stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated negotiation skills or ability to quickly develop those skills.
  • Highlevel time management and organisational skills.
  • Ability to engage effectively in multidisciplinary teams.
  • Excellent writing and drafting skills, including attention to detail and a capacity to produce legal correspondence and agreements of a high quality.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage a significant file/caseload with limited supervision within time constraints, including working independently, setting priorities and meeting deadlines.

Knowledge

  • Understanding of legal terminology, regulations and State and Federal Court Systems.
  • An understanding of the cultural, social, economic and political issues affecting First Nations peoples generally and native title issues in particular.
  • Practical experience (or ability to learn) file management and time recording.
