Austin Health is a major university teaching hospital and is one of the designated Victorian biotechnology centres.


The BioResources Facility provides our stakeholders with the critical infrastructure and staff expertise to support best practice medical research using animals for translational research in cancer medicine, diabetes, obesity, kidney and liver disease and pregnancy.

An exciting opportunity currently exists for enthusiastic
part time and full time experienced animal technicians in the
BioResources Facility.


Summary of position

As an animal technician your role is to maintain our Animal Facility's high standard of hygiene, husbandry, health and animal welfare in accordance with approved breeding projects, and the Australian Code of Practice for the Care and Use of Animals for Scientific Purposes, and Code of Practice for the Housing and Care of Laboratory Mice, Rats (Guinea pigs and Rabbits).

To be successful in this role you must demonstrate key responsibilities and skills such as:

  • Qualified in Animal Technology (e.g. Diploma of or Certificate III in Animal Technology) or similar.
  • An understanding of the Australian Code of Practice for the Care and Use of Animals for Scientific Purpose and other relevant legislation such as Physical Containment Level 2 protocols.
  • Demonstrable experience and knowledge in the breeding and care of animals, specifically rodents, including mouse and rat husbandry, handling, identification, health monitoring, restraint, injection and collection techniques.
  • An understanding of the importance of maintaining the containment and exclusions barriers implemented within an animal facility.
  • Demonstrable high level of communication, interpersonal and written skills to a broad range of stakeholders from 1st year research students to Professors.
  • Good organisation, time management and problemsolving skills.
  • A demonstrated capacity to work independently and in teams and preparedness to make decisions.
  • Demonstrable commitment to animal welfare.
