Deakin Health Technology Assessment (DHTA) is a major research stream within Deakin Health Economics (DHE) at Deakin's Burwood campus. This document details the position description for Research Fellow (Level B).

The Research Fellow (Level B) will primarily conduct research under supervision in the area of Health Technology Assessment.


DHTA is one of several university-based teams nominated as 'independent evaluators' for the Commonwealth government, to assist the Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee (PBAC) through its Economic Sub-Committee (ESC) in their evaluation of submissions from the pharmaceutical industry to gain listing for drugs on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS).

DHTA also undertakes evaluations of medical procedures and diagnostic tests considered by the Medical Services Advisory Committee (MSAC) that are seeking subsidy on the Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS).

The appointee will contribute to evaluations conducted for both PBAC and MSAC and other HTA assessments.

DHE is located within the Institute for Health Transformation (IHT) in the Faculty of Health.

In addition to line management, all research staff within the IHT report to the Pro Vice-Chancellor (Health) via the Head of DHE, Director of IHT and Head of School.


The Research Fellow (Level B) is expected to contribute towards the research effort of the University and conduct research independently and / or team research within the field of Health Technology Assessment.


The Research Fellow (Level B) will carry out activities to develop his or her research expertise relevant to health technology assessment, in particular, to prepare timely, accurate and concise health technology assessments under supervision either as a member of a team, or independently (where appropriate), to achieve the objectives of DHE.


Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Effectively conduct health technology assessments and associated tasks, including critical appraisal of the clinical evidence, economic evaluation and financial (budgetary) implications
  • Remain uptodate and contributing to current literature and methods relevant to the area of expertise
  • Contribute to teaching in relation to his/her research project(s) and / or area of expertise
  • Initiate, design and conduct and may lead productive, highquality research, scholarship and creative activities generating high impact outputs
  • Engage collaboratively to develop novel and highquality research activities
  • Widely communicate outputs to discipline(s) and the community
  • Ensure impact of academic activity in the field and the community
  • Build national reputation, based on growing, focused body of work recognised for quality, excellence and impact
  • Initiate, design, conducts and may lead intra
- and inter-disciplinary research collaborations, to enable major breakthroughs in knowledge and understanding and solutions to complex problems

  • Initiate, design, conduct and may lead in development of industry partnerships and collaboration to enable major breakthroughs, innovative solutions for future translation into real world impact
  • Build track record of timely delivery of outcomes for industry partners
  • Supervise honours and/or HDR students with timely completions and productive, high quality outcomes
  • Provide effective mentoring to HDR students to support professional and career development and employability
  • Attend meetings associated with the research project(s) with which the researcher is involved or other meetings as appropriate
  • Adopt and promote a culture of research excellence, innovation and impact
  • Support industry partnerships that provide HDRs with industry experience

Key selection criteria for this role:

  • Qualifications and experience
  • Essential_
  • Postgraduate qualifications (a PhD or equivalent or Masters) in health economics and/or health technology assessment, or other relevant equivalent qualifications for the conduct of health technology assessment.
  • Demonstrated experience in analysing and critically appraising clinical evidence, economic evaluations and assessments of financial (budgetary) implications.
  • At least two years' experience with the independent assessment or development of Pharmaceutical Benefits Advisory Committee (PBAC) or Medical Services Advisory Committee (MSAC) submissio
