Where you'll be working

Western Sydney Local Health District (WSLHD) is responsible for providing primary and secondary health care for people living in the Auburn, Blacktown, and The Hills Shire, Holroyd and Parramatta Local Government Areas (LGAs) and tertiary care to residents of the Greater Western Region.

We are committed to our vision of 'better health services for the people of western Sydney and beyond' and to the delivery of health care or related services in line with our core values of collaboration, openness, respect and empowerment.

What you'll be doing

The Towards Zero Suicides (TZS) initiatives seek to provide leading best practice crisis care and support, build on local community resilience and improve systems and practices to reduce the suicide rate in NSW.

Informed clincial practise is intriumental across all aspects of the TZS iniatives.

As part of this initiative, Western Sydney Local Health District (WSLHD) delivers two suicide prevention services, Safe Haven and the Suicide Prevention Outreach Team (SPOT).

Both services aim to provide an alternative to presenting to Emergency Department for people experiencing suicidal distress or in suicidal crisis.

Safe Haven is a non-clinical drop-in service operationalised by a team of Peer Workers with lived experience of suicide. SPOT provides mobile outreach by a team of Peer Workers and Senior Clinicians.

Both services have been co-designed with people with lived experience and health professionals and adopt a compassionate care model to support consumer (also referred to as patients or clients) centric service provisions.

With both services operating afterhours, after hours work is a requirement of the role.

The TZS Senior Mental Health Clinicians (SMHC) will work in the SPOT alongside Peer Workers, in pairs and as equals, to deliver assertive outreach services to consumers in suicidal crisis, in their homes or preferred community locations.

The SMHC will use their years of clinical experience to provide recovery-oriented and trauma-informed clinical care in an acute setting.

Scope of practice includes (not limited to) triage, comprehensive assessments, psychosocial support, brief intervention, safety planning, consultation, care coordination, support with service navigation and engagement, advocacy, follow up and family and carer support.

Senior Mental Health Clinicians will deliver support that aligns with the principles of a step up/step down care.

This includes making referrals to a range of community-based services for ongoing support if required (step down), or escalating concerns over consumer wellbeing to other acute or emergency services (step up).

They will also be required to work with other key services and stakeholders e.g. Emergency Departments, The Way Back Service etc. to ensure an integrated care approach for consumers is secured.

The SPOT service operates as one session crisis intervention service and requires the ability to work in an acute environment.

Senior Mental Health Clinicians will be working autonomously with mínimal direct clinical supervision.

  • People with disabilities who meet the selection criteria are encouraged to apply; and where required, WSLHD will implement reasonable adjustment consistent with industry standard._
