Investigative Tax Specialist - EL2


The role:


We are seeking seasoned tax professionals with an investigative mindset to join our Tax Avoidance Taskforce
in the Integrated Compliance business area.


If you have expertise in either tax controversy, corporate tax, forensic accounting, insolvency, litigation, financial services, financial auditing or investigations with tax, finance, corporate law or regulatory implications, we'd love to hear from you.

Tax Specialist, **in our
Wealth Program or
Promoters and Tax Exploitation teams, you will:

  • be responsible for leading and providing strategic direction for detection and investigation of tax avoidance or evasion by taxpayers and/or their advisers who may adopt challenging behaviours
- use your investigative mindset to conduct intensive examination of complex arrangements and plan tailored tactical approaches for gathering information and collecting evidence
- use your tax knowledge, technical expertise and ability to engage and influence with diverse stakeholders to develop and implement bespoke solutions to address harmful tax avoidance or evasion behaviours
- direct analyses of large volumes of data and information drawing insights to make balanced decisions using professional judgement
- manage, mentor and coach staff, continuously building expertise and capability

We want to hear from people who have:

  • technical expertise and experience in directing investigations or audits of regulatory breaches which entail tax implications in complex environments
- highly developed leadership skills and ability to negotiate, influence and liaise with diverse stakeholders to navigate sensitive and contested issues and develop optimal solutions to achieve business outcomes
- a deep understanding of the taxation and superannuation legislative and financial environments, particularly in the areas of public or private groups
- investigative nous and extensive experience in providing tactical direction for information and evidence gathering, interpretation of data, analysis of financial records and combatting the concealment of facts
- a commitment and passion for mentoring and coaching staff within and outside your immediate team to build auditing or investigations skills, and tax technical knowledge
- ability to lead, influence and manage change and take an active role in the implementation of the organisation's strategic direction
- recognised qualifications in accounting, law, financial services, investigations or commerce-related disciplines

About the area:

The Tax Avoidance Taskforce sits in the Client Engagement Group of the ATO.

It plays a key role in ensuring multinational enterprises, large public and private businesses (and associated individuals) pay the right amount of tax in Australia.


The Wealth Program and the Promoters and Tax Exploitation teams are part of the Tax Avoidance Taskforce within the Integrated Compliance business line.

Integrated Compliance business line in CEG has a specific focus on delivering holistic solutions to counter deliberate, systemic or complex behavioural issues that pose the biggest threats to the integrity of the tax and superannuation systems.


The Wealth Program team investigates or audits private groups that engage in complex tax avoidance behaviours and implements solutions to ensure compliance with tax obligations so that the right amount of tax is paid in Australia.

While the team's default position is to co-operatively resolve issues, we have specialist expertise in escalating enforcement responses including co-ordinating actions with domestic and international partner agencies to counter obstructive behaviours adopted by the taxpayers.


The Promoters and Tax Exploitation team focuses on tax advisors and intermediaries that promote and enable tax exploitation for their clients which can be public or private groups.

The team detects, investigates, and disrupts promoters of tax exploitation to prevent future harm to the tax and superannuation system.

It also has a key role in preventing the proliferation of promoted tax exploitation by raising public awareness of the conseque
