Hours: 30.4 hours (4 days/pw, 0.8 FTE), Sunday, 8am-2pm, Monday-Thursday 9am-3pm


Remuneration:
$44, of $55,328 FT rate)+superannuation


The Sexton furthers the life and ministry of St John's by overseeing the cleanliness and maintenance of church property, ensuring that the operations of the church and its ministries can proceed in a way that is welcoming, safe, and sustainable.


THE IDEAL SEXTON

  • Will support and uphold the Christian ethos of St John's.
  • Is eager to serve and has the skill and ability to provide light maintenance, landscaping, and cleaning for the church and its property.
  • Is selfmotivated, works well independently and on teams, and can prioritise tasks according to the needs of the church.
  • Has attention to detail, and shows great care for the longterm maintenance and improvement of St John's property and facilities.
  • Will always work in a manner that complies with Work, Health, & Safety regulations.
  • Has a current Working With Children Check and is willing to undergo Safe Ministry training.
  • Can pass a medical screening to demonstrate physical fitness for the role.
  • Represents the church to the community in an affable, warm, and hospitable manner.
  • Is or becomes an active weekly attendee at St John's 10am service.

ESSENTIAL ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Cleaning

  • Perform regular cleaning tasks to maintain the cleanliness and tidiness of the church premises, including the church, hall, offices, restrooms, and other designated areas.
  • Dusting, sweeping, mopping, and vacuuming floors as needed.
  • Clean windows, pews, chairs, and other furniture to ensure a presentable appearance.
  • Empty trash and recycling bins regularly.
  • Maintain a supply of cleaning materials and promptly report any maintenance or repair needs to the Parish Administrator.

Minor Maintenance

  • Conduct routine inspections to identify and address minor repairs or maintenance needs within the church property.
  • Perform basic repairs such as changing light bulbs, fixing leaky faucets, and replacing damaged furniture or fixtures.
  • Coordinate with external vendors or contractors for more extensive repairs or maintenance when necessary.
  • Maintain an inventory of maintenance supplies and equipment.

Landscape Maintenance

  • Ensure the exterior of the church property is wellmaintained, including the grounds, gardens, walkways, and parking areas.
  • Perform routine gardening tasks such as mowing lawns, trimming hedges, weeding, and watering plants.
  • Keep pathways and entrances clear of debris and leaves.
  • Monitor and report any concerns regarding trees, plants, or landscaping elements to Parish Administrator.

Service and Event Setup

  • Attend the 10am service each Sunday, arriving early (8am) to help setup and staying late (1pm) to ensure that things are ready for the 5pm service.
  • Assist in setting up for various events and activities held at the church, such as worship services, weddings, funerals, community gatherings, and meetings.
  • Arrange seating, tables, and other equipment as required for each event.
  • Coordinate with clergy, event organizers, and volunteers to ensure smooth event setup and takedown.
  • Provide general support during special events as negotiated with the Rector and/or Parish Administrator.

Miscellaneous

  • Other reasonable administrative tasks assigned by the Rector;
  • Meet weekly with the Rector and/or Parish Administrator to ensure that you are on the same page about priorities for that week.
