Why Your Role Matters:


As a Research Assistant, you will support ongoing investigations and carry out specific experiments under a National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) grant.

You will support research in large-scale expression profiling of ovarian tumours to identify prognostic markers for ovarian cancer.

The role reports to the Professor, Molecular Oncology Group and has no direct reports.


Responsibilities will include but not be limited to:

  • Supporting the conduct of research experiments under direction, following establish procedure and appropriate to the position, including:
  • Conducting RNA and DNA extractions from large numbers of tumour samples.
  • Performing high throughput processing of samples and PCR.
  • Performing expression profiling of large numbers of tumour samples using the NanoString platform and data quality control.
  • Assist with data analysis in consultation with supervisor and assist with data collection, maintain accurate records and prepare reports as required.

Who You Are:


  • Relevant tertiary qualification in Science, or equivalent competence gained through any combination of education, training and experience.
  • Previous professional experience in a laboratory research related role with demonstrated experience in genomics or molecular biology techniques.
  • Experience in performing high throughput processing of samples and PCR.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills with ability to exercise discretion and confidentiality.
  • Proven ability to show attention to detail and commitment to quality, with evidence of ability to accurately plan, execute and document experimental research
  • Work both independently and as part of a team with demonstrated experience supporting and contributing to projects and initiatives.
  • An understanding of and commitment to UNSW's aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines, and knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training.
