The Australian Synchrotron (ANSTO Clayton Campus) is currently entering an exciting new phase of upgrade and expansion.

Over the course of the next 3-8 years they will continue to upgrade the facility with 2 significant programs i.e the BRIGHT Beamline duplication and the Australian Synchrotron Capital Program.


Position purpose

The Planner - Schedule & Workforce is responsible for creating, developing and maintaining program and project scheduling activities for funded construction, science, engineering and instrumentation development projects.

The Program Planner will engage with key stakeholders ensuring progress and support achieving program and project outcomes. The role sits within the Australian Synchrotron Project Management Office and reports to the Senior Manager, Capital Portfolio.


Key Accountabilities

  • Work closely with project managers and guide the development of project plans /schedules to a standard structure
  • Develop, maintain and manage a program level schedule for capital projects at the Australian Synchrotron
  • Work with group leads and project teams across Science, Engineering, Controls and Scientific Computing plus others to identify, map and report on the workforce required to deliver the plan/ schedule
  • Assess risk to delivery through analysis of critical path activities, resource availability and demand, and other project indicators
  • Produce program status reports (dashboards, graphs, etc.) and identify areas of concern and provide recommendations to the General Manager
  • Capital Portfolio and the Senior Management Team.
  • Consult and share information with teams to achieve program, project and business outcomes
  • Where feasible, implement continuous improvement activities relating to planning and scheduling processes and other relevant areas***
    Key Challenges
  • Manage the scheduling of multiple complex, internal and external projects across multiple programs to meet challenging timeframes, budgets and requirements.
  • Understanding resource supply and demand across multiple groups in a matrix structure.
  • Carry out work in a regulated environment with adherence to all regulations.
  • Carry out work in accordance with operational requirements and tight deadlines.
  • Interacting with people of different technical and scientific backgrounds.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Demonstrated recent experience in project planning and scheduling methodologies for multifaceted projects, including labour resources demand forecasting.
  • Engineering or related qualification, advanced computing skills and proficient knowledge of MS Project, Excel & Teams
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with a flexible, collaborative approach to engaging crossfunctional teams
  • High level ability to analyse and interpret project data and proactively identify issues.
  • Effective organisational and planning skills, including high attention to detail and demonstrated ability to work independently
  • Australian citizenship and security clearance is required
