A unique opportunity to join the Energy Market Intelligence Unit (EMI Unit) and play a pivotal role in in supporting the State Electricity Commission (SEC).


Position overview:


The Principal Market Modelling Analyst in the Energy Market Intelligence Unit (EMI Unit) prepares relevant quantitative analysis and modelling to meet the needs of the State Electricity Commission (SEC).

This role leads quantitative analysis on energy markets and undertakes energy market modelling using optimisation tools. The position requires a detailed level of understanding the operation of the energy markets.


Responsibilities:


Technical accountabilities:


  • Manage the development of an energy market modelling work program, in close collaboration with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Lead the development of modelling capability goals and a decisionmaking framework that aligns with the needs of the organisation.
  • Lead projects and energy market modelling studies, including the development of mediumterm dispatch models and longerterm capacity expansion models, and analysis of energy market data from AEMO's Market Management System (MMS) database as well as other large sets of data.

Make sound judgements, including

  • Deliver strategic market insights that support the successful development and execution of DELWP strategy,
  • Engage in robust debate about the strategy and the market in order to support DELWP having the best possible insight into the market and its evolution,
  • Support the Victorian government energy road map and other strategic initiatives,
  • Make timely decisions under tight deadlines with competing priorities. This will require gathering the right information to make informed, appropriate decisions to ensure Program Delivery,
  • Manage relationships with other key stakeholders, both internal and external to DELWP, at all levels, from executive level to analyst, and
  • Take responsibility for own work priorities to ensure accuracy, quality, value, and timeliness of work undertaken, contributing to and incorporating continuous improvement.

Deliver outcomes in a manner that supports all key strategic DELWP activities, including:

  • Highly visible proof points for the cultural elements of collaboration, innovation and achievement
  • showcase for how DELWP's wants to operate in the future,
  • Support the engagement with Victorian government and Federal government on policy and regulation,
  • Support the development of Victorian energy growth opportunities, and
  • Develop and maintain strong connection with other key market initiatives across the market.

Manage multidimensional stakeholders and communications to support the success of the program.

  • Manage a program of training, technical support and guidance to all teams across the Energy Group, and lifting the capability of the organisation through training
  • Drive the resolution of complex issues in a specialised function, including clearly communicating complex technical ideas to nontechnical stakeholders, and drafting reports and providing recommendations on risks and issues.
  • Practice cultural safety by creating environments, relationships and systems free from racism and discrimination so that people can feel safe, valued and able to participate.

Specialist/Technical Expertise/Qualifications

  • Bachelor, Honours or advanced degree in electrical engineering, statistics, mathematics, or other highly quantitative degree.
  • At least 3 to 5 years' indepth experience of energy market dynamics,
  • Highlevel familiarity with energy market modelling software such PLEXOS or Prophet.
  • Expert ability in a programming language used in the development of quantitative analysis, machine learning models and energy market models (e.g., R or Python).

This is a fixed term position available for a period of 3 years. The work location for this position is flexible within Victoria with hybrid work arrangements available.
