What is the role?


Applications are sought from suitably qualified applicants wishing to be considered for the role of Deputy Practice Manager - Team Leader.

The role is at the AFP Band 6 level and the position is located in Canberra.


The Deputy Practice Manager (Team Leader) role provides high level administrative and strategic support to the General Counsels AFPL and to the Legal Practice Manager.

This role is responsible for providing effective direction and guidance to the Legal Practice Management Team (LPMT) and coordination of the various administrative and paralegal activities across AFPL.


This includes:
Providing high level support to lawyers and professional staff within AFPL including managing in-house legal training requirements and progressing ad hoc requests from AFPL executive team;
Managing financial and resourcing activities for AFPL, including recruitment, external legal services provider engagement and expenditure and assisting the Legal Practice Manager as required regarding budgets etc
Effective supervision, leadership and performance development to members of the LPMT to ensure delivery of high quality services to AFPL lawyers and internal and corporate clients; and
Managing and coordinating the legal graduate and paralegal engagement and activities across AFPL.


As a Team Leader you also play a pivotal role in developing people, managing change and influencing behaviours that lead to a supportive culture that respects the perspectives, talents and value of each individual.

Consistent with the AFP values, AFP leadership philosophy, organisational reform agendas, AFP corporate business plans and your Performance Development Agreement, the expectation is that you will deliver on the core responsibilities and meet any requirements of the position as outlined below.

What will you do?


Duties include:

Working with the Legal Practice Manager to lead, manage and develop the LPMT;

Delegating or undertaking tasks as required in relation to:
finance and procurement, including contract management, spending proposals, legal services procurement, Comcover claims, accounts payable, and asset management;
new employee on-boarding, induction and training and development, including CLEs;
knowledge management, including iManage, LEX, maintaining research material and updating policy and procedure manuals;
Managing and resolving minor issues;
Providing support to the General Counsels Legal, AFPL Team Leaders and the Legal Practice Manager; and
Liaising with internal and external stakeholders.


The Deputy Practice Manager is expected to demonstrate:
Relevant knowledge and experience in practice management, preferably within a legal environment;
Ability to manage and track finances across a range of activities (e.g. procurement, expenditure, budgets etc);
Demonstrated ability to lead a team;
Excellent time management skills, ability to prioritise tasks and meet tight deadlines;
The ability to focus on, and delegate work, in a busy team environment;
Attention to detail and a high level of accuracy;
Strong communication and people management skills;
Experience in drafting routine correspondence and briefs; and
A professional approach and the ability to work collaboratively as part of a high performing team.
Essential Requirements

A Negative Vetting 1 (Secret) security clearance or the ability to obtain one.
