Description

Develop new models for the Oxygen Steelmaking process that will allow engineers to incorporate new source of iron to be introduced into the process.


  • Full time, fixed term position at our Hawthorn campus
  • Stipend of $35,000pa for 3 years

About the Scholarship


You will use modelling tools developed previously in collaboration with Tata Steel Technology and a combined knowledge of Japanese double converter practice to model different scenarios associated with using alternative liquid iron feeds.

As part of the project, you will conduct experiments focused on specific problems identified from the modelling and ideally plant trial data would be used to confirm the predictions made from the models developed in this study.


The successful applicant will work closely with Professor Geoffrey Brooks and Professor Akbar Rhamdhani from Swinburne University of Technology, and research engineers from Tata Steel Technology (in the Netherlands).

Funding is also provided to facilitate annual visits to the Netherlands to interacts and work with staff from Tata Steel.


About you
To be successful in the role, you will have:

  • Bachelor (or Masters) of Engineering or Bachelor (or Masters) of Applied Science
  • Industrial experience in a process industry
  • Training in Mathematical Modelling
  • Training in Software Programming
  • A background in Process Metallurgy, Chemical Engineering, Materials Engineering or Mechanical Engineering would be advantageous.
