Services Australia (the agency) operates a sophisticated fraud and corruption detection program, with data analytics and profiling that includes near real-time detection of fraud.

The agency investigates matters of fraud and misconduct and may pursue disciplinary, administrative, and civil or criminal sanctions where appropriate.

The agency is looking for people with an investigative mindset and critical thinking skills to join its investigations workforce. Investigations experience is desirable, but not mandatory.

Criminal Investigator

The Criminal Investigator role is aligned with the Australian Government Investigations Standards and criminal law and primarily gathers admissible evidence for a criminal sanction.

This role may complete some administrative tasks or refer job to an Administrative Investigator.

APS5 Criminal Investigations Officers undertake investigations of potential fraud, unauthorised access, misconduct and criminal offences committed against the agency.

As part of their role, Criminal Investigations Officers work in a multi-disciplinary team to lead or contribute to investigations under the guidance of senior staff.

They exercise discretion with respect to how precedents, procedures and guidelines are interpreted and applied.

APS5 Criminal Investigations Officers provide complementary support to, and cooperate with, Administrative and Criminal Investigations teams to achieve business outcomes.

Criminal Investigations Officers exercise a degree of independent judgement and make ethical decisions within defined parameters, including submitting specific tasks for approval and quality review.

They undertake their work in the context of competing priorities and contribute to changes in workplace practices and business improvement strategies.

Criminal Investigations Officers liaise with stakeholders and represent the agency with credibility and professionalism.

Administrative Investigator

The Administrative Investigator role applies a more technically complex lens of Social Security law (right payment, right person) and applies remediation to customer records, including recovery of public money.

This role may identify criminal conduct and refer job to a Criminal Investigator after seeking Operation Management Committee approval.

APS5 Administrative Investigations Officers provide complimentary support to the APS6 Senior Investigative Officers and cooperate with Criminal and Administrative investigation teams to achieve business outcomes.

They work independently and collaboratively and undertake their work in the context of competing priorities. They liaise effectively with stakeholders and represent the agency with credibility and professionalism.
