Position Overview


The Associate provides legal and administrative support to their judge and works closely with other chambers, registry and court staff to achieve desired outcomes.

This is a role that requires an articulate, energetic and resilient individual who can build positive professional relationships.

Major Activities
The responsibilities assigned to an Associate will vary between chambers but typically might include the following:
Provide Legal Support

  • Carry out legal research, managing workloads appropriately to ensure that requests for legal research are responded to in an accurate and timely manner
  • Proof read judgments
  • Accompany the judge to court
  • Prepare speeches and other papers
Provide Administrative Support

  • Progress and facilitate the quick, inexpensive and efficient resolution of cases by organising judge's court sittings, listings, diary and exhibits as required
  • Provide administrative assistance to the judge in court
  • Contact parties and ensure compliance with court orders
  • Work closely with the judge's other chambers staff and where required provide assistance with the administrative operations of the chambers
Maintain Positive Professional Relationships

  • As a chambers contact point maintain a high standard of service to and positive professional relationships with judges, the legal profession and other court users
  • Maintain positive professional relationships with court staff, including registrars, chambers and registry staff

Formal Qualifications


Legal qualification and admission to practice as a practitioner of the High Court and/or the Supreme Court of a State or Territory of Australia; or progressing towards admission, to the satisfaction of the judge.


Selection Criteria

  • Legal qualification and admitted to practice or progressing towards admission as a practitioner of the High Court and/or the Supreme Court of a State or Territory of Australia, to the satisfaction of the judge
  • The ability to carry out legal research, managing workloads appropriately to ensure that requests for legal research are responded to in an accurate and timely manner
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Welldeveloped interpersonal and liaison skills
  • Competent organisational, administrative and IT skills.
