Under new leadership, we are looking to re-energise our brand and approach to our external communications as we return to our fintech roots, regain our reputation as a financial services disruptor, and continue to define the future of payments in Australia.

The Head of Communications is a senior leader within Tyro, reporting to the Chief People, Culture and Communications Officer.

With a minimum of ten years external communications experience, the Head of Communications is responsible for designing and implementing Tyro's external communications strategy, with a particular focus on media relations.

They will demonstrate their strong communications background, fantastic stakeholder management skills, and proven ability to craft a compelling narrative that support business objectives and drive engagement.


As part of the People, Culture and Communications team, you will oversee and support internal communications - such as monthly all-company meetings, weekly newsletters, and internal communications channels - to help build culture, assist recruitment efforts, and elevate the employee experience.


Other responsibilities include developing messaging, producing content for social media, identifying and preparing relevant awards submissions, managing Tyro's intranet, and occasional speech writing.


Key responsibilities:


  • Lead Tyro's external and internal communications.
  • Develop and implement a new external communications strategy focused on building Tyro's external reputation, supporting key business announcements and product innovation, and promoting the customer experience.
  • Act as Tyro's key media liaison, managing all proactive and reactive media engagements, escalating reputational risks, and remaining informed on topical issues in the industry and business.
  • Assist in developing strategies and messaging for the CEO and senior leadership team, including thought leadership and profileraising opportunities such as speaking opportunities.
  • Produce written and digital content for Tyro's external and internal channels, media, CEO, and senior leadership, such as media releases, social media posts, and graphics.
  • Build relationships with key external stakeholders, including journalists and customers, to bring communications strategies to life.
  • Collaborate with other business teams to uncover insights that inform communications strategies and position Tyro as a thoughtleader in the fintech, payments, and banking industries.
  • Play a critical role on Tyro's senior leadership team.

To be considered for the role you will have the following:

  • 10+ years of experience in an external communications, corporate communications, or PR Manager position, preferably in a finance or technology business. Experience in a listed company is preferred but not necessary.
  • Outstanding communication (written and verbal) skills and a positive, motivated, and high energy attitude.
  • A passion for external communications and the value that it can add to a business that champions SME customers.
  • A proven track record of building and maintaining relationships with journalists, the media, and other key stakeholders.
  • Outstanding level of attention to detail and ability to connect the dots.
  • Ability to be agile, adapt to requests and work in a fastpaced environment.
  • A genuine interest in embedding yourself across Tyro to extract newsworthy stories, have fun, and be part of a great culture.
