Aviation Safety Assurance Lead


Airborne Solutions Australia provides aerial surveillance services under contract to the Australian Border Force as the largest civil maritime surveillance operation of its kind in the world, and a search-and rescue capability across nearly 10 percent of the earth's surface under Australian Maritime Safety Authority.


Reporting to the Head of Safety and Quality (HSQ) you will contribute to the improvement, management, effectiveness, and oversight of the safety management framework ensuring policies and procedures are in compliance with business and Regulatory requirements and aligned to industry best practise.

You will champion safety risk management, educate, and mentor others on best practice and build and maintain excellent working relationships with all areas of the business.


Key Duties and Responsibilities either personally or by delegation

  • Oversight and deliver the annual systems assurance program with relevant internal and external stakeholders.
  • Plan, coordinate, conduct, monitor and regularly report on the assurance program
  • Lead audits and investigations to effectively determine causal and contributory factors; identify safety & quality deficiencies processes or services; and seek opportunities for improvement.
  • Promote and facilitate safety risk management activities across the business
  • Oversight and facilitate change management activities and conduct risk assessments with the management team and relevant stakeholders
  • Prepare reports; and assess the effectiveness of corrective actions/ and/or determine appropriate recommendations to address the applicable safety issue(s).
  • Champion continuous improvement and development through the Safety Management System (SMS)
  • Further enhance, implement, and develop effective reporting protocols, procedures, and processes through the SMS
  • Oversight the safety database and risk register, producing monthly and quarterly reports by ensuring the integrity of the data in the safety reporting database and Business Enterprise reporting tool is true and correct
  • Build effective relationships with key internal and external stakeholders
  • Provide advice on the analysis and interpretation of safety information and data
  • Support the Head of Safety & Quality or other safety department management with project tasks when required.
  • Provide safety training across the business to meet legislative/ regulatory requirements

Qualifications and experience

  • Australian Year 11 or equivalent minimum, Year 12 preferred.
  • A minimum of 2 years operational experience in the aviation industry in either a safety or an operational area
  • Understanding of Safety Management Systems and the CASA SMS Framework
  • Safety investigator qualification
  • Auditor qualification in Quality Assurance / Safety Auditing in a similar field
  • Experience with addressing human factors in complex systems
  • Experience in system safety and / or high reliability industries
  • Advanced MS Office skills

Desirable qualifications and experience

  • A pilot licence or engineering experience highly desirable
  • A formal qualification in human factors or safety risk management
  • Certificate IV in Workplace Training and Assessment
  • Experience in the development and facilitation of training programs

Personal skills and abilities

  • High quality relationship maintenance and conflict resolution skills
  • Good working knowledge of MS Office programs (Word, Excel, Access, Business Intelligence (BI), SharePoint and Enterprise Reporting)
  • Excellent time management skills to manage workloads within specific timeframes with the ability to work autonomously.

Work environment

  • This position requires both office and outdoor work
  • National travel is required
  • You may be required to gain and maintain an Australian Government and Australian Border Force security clearance
