Rio Tinto has a broad portfolio of international underground mining assets including the operating Diavik Diamond Mine and Oyu Tolgoi copper mine; the Resolution and Kennecott copper projects; and the Jadar lithium-borate project.

The UG CoE Major Hazards team works collaboratively with Rio Tinto Studies, Projects and Operations to reduce risk associated with underground major hazards, by sharing critical learnings from incidents and best practice technological advancements and by establishing and reviewing implementation of Group technical standards and procedures.

We partner with leaders and technical SME's from across the Group to address underground major hazard issues and to support implementation of the Group standards and procedures at each Project and Operation.

The
Group Technical Underground team work collaboratively on many initiatives and look forward to welcoming you into this position.

Reporting to the
Senior Manager UG Major Hazards you will manage your workload autonomously with the knowledge that support will also be provided where needed.


Key responsibilities include:

  • Provide leadership in UG mining safety performance to all underground studies, projects and operations, delivering best for business outcomes
  • Provide coaching and guidance across the Group to support the implementation of Group underground technical standards and procedures
  • Champion the sharing of information across the Group relating to learnings from incidents and best practices for managing UG major hazards
  • Lead the continuous improvement of Group UG standards, procedures and supporting tools and fatality prevention systems
  • Provide assurance against Group UG standards and procedures across all Rio Tinto sites with underground areas
  • Prepare well executed technical documentation and reports for distribution at Groupwide level

Your clear and adaptable communication style will enable you to partner effectively with stakeholders across a broad range of disciplines.


You will bring:

  • A commitment to the safety of yourself and your team
  • Strong written and verbal English skills
  • Preference for a degree qualified Mining Engineer or a strong background in underground operations
  • Experience in Mines Rescue Response is desirable
  • Underground mining experience in a technical and/or operational capacity
  • A strong understanding of the mining process and ability to analyse deficiencies in current state and identify opportunities to improve safety performance
  • Effective stakeholder engagement and management skills with the ability to build trusted, respectful relationships
  • Willingness to remain informed of industry underground major hazard incidents and best practices to manage underground risks
  • A curious mind motivated to work independently through proactive problem solving
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite
