The Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) is an independent statutory authority established by the Australian Government to maintain an impartial and independent electoral system for eligible voters through active electoral roll management, efficient delivery of polling services, and targeted education and public awareness programs.

The Team

You'll work as part of a small, dynamic, and fast-paced team, responsible for providing external communication activities, and developing and delivering information and advertising campaigns.

The team works to support all Australians to exercise their right and responsibility to vote in federal elections and referendums.

This includes a strong focus on communication to effectively reach and resonate with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

In the lead up to and during an electoral event you'll deliver critical activities in a high-pressured environment, working with an expanded team.

It's an exciting opportunity for a creative and skilled communication professional to use their experience working with a talented small team on some of the largest and most impactful campaigns around.

As Assistant Director you'll drive the strategic development and delivery of the AEC's external communication approach for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

You're the right person if you're able to draw on your experience in delivering communication strategies and campaigns, including to diverse and specialist audiences, to help people enrol and vote.

You'll collaborate with colleagues in communication and community engagement areas of the AEC - including the Indigenous Electoral Participation Program - on targeted communication activities.

Your role will include activities in communication research, strategy, advertising campaign development and implementation, product development, media partnerships, and community and stakeholder outreach.

To excel you'll have:
- a broad range of experience in communication.
- an understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture, experiences, and communication preferences to deliver culturally appropriate communication activities.
- strong project management skills - including the ability to multitask, meet deadlines, and build relationships with business areas and external suppliers
- the ability to undertake complex and/or sensitive work under broad direction.

We're looking for someone who:

thinks strategically and creatively - to develop, manage and evaluate communication activities (including advertising campaigns) that are effective and culturally appropriate for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples

works well with external suppliers - procuring and effectively managing contracted services, particularly for advertising campaigns

collaborates - building and managing relationships with business areas and external stakeholders (including across geographically dispersed locations), and to provide sound advice and support

is positive and calm under pressure - who can work in a fast-paced environment, and with a willingness to step up to additional communication demands for federal elections and/or referendums
