Nurse Unit Manager - 5North & Complex Care Unit (Cancer Services & Gynaecology)

  • 12 months fixed term 38 hours per week

The major areas of focus for 5North - Cancer Service are gynaecological and breast cancer. The Oncology Unit has integrated inpatient and low risk chemotherapy services to promote co-ordinated, patient focussed care. Our nursing staff work across all these services.

Qualified nursing staff are also rostered to work in the Complex Care Unit which cares for women from both the maternity and gynaecology units who need increased monitoring and intervention.


Your contribution


Reporting to the Women's Health Services Director, the 5North Nurse Unit Manager (NUM) is a leadership position assuming the effective and efficient operational management and coordination of the nursing and administrative staff within the department, ensuring that the unit achieves its hospital and key performance indicators.

The successful applicant will manage the operational resources of the unit having regard to the organisational objectives, policies and procedures.

In consultation with the Director of Women's Health Services, the NUM will set the direction for the unit to ensure services are provided to the highest standard that emphasise excellence in patient care, multidisciplinary collaboration, efficiency and evidence based approaches.

The NUM will be responsible for providing mentoring and leadership to the Nursing Profession.

In addition to its operational function, the position has a strong focus on business and strategic planning for the efficacy of nursing services within the context of the strategic direction of the Women's.

Your duties will include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • In partnership with the Clinical Directors of Women's Health Services, provide strategic and clinical leadership for 5North
  • Manage staff and lead the recruitment of staff
  • Demonstrates the ability to assist and support organisational change
  • Accountable for ensuring that adequate staffing with appropriately qualified and credentialed staff is achieved in accordance with legislative and industrial requirements
  • Provide leadership for direct reports, appraise performance of staff and ensure that staff receives appropriate performance management, professional training and development opportunities
  • Ensure that all staff are supported to work professionally, safely and effectively, in accordance with RWH evidencebased guidelines, and relevant professional standards

About you
To be successful within this role you will need to have

  • Degree in Nursing and/or Midwifery which meets AHPRA registration requirements (Division 1 Registered Nurse AHPRA)
  • Recent and relevant experience in a managerial/leadership position
  • High level clinical nursing ability the proven ability to directly influence, communicate with and encourage a multidisciplinary team
  • Experience in conflict management and negotiation
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, incl. effective communication with staff, patients, other departments and community agencies
