The Team


The drone operations team, part of TMC Field Operations, consists of 65 pilots operating over 50 drones across Transport, who conduct surveying, inspection, media and incident response drone operations.

Our main goal is to provide situational awareness of operators and field staff to reduce incident detection and clearance times and Improve management of events and interchanges.


We operate in a diverse environment, ranging from traffic incident reporting, coverage of New Years eve at Sydney Harbour or flying a DiaB remotely from our dedicated Remote Operation Centre.

Our operations have a dedicated maintenance hub that includes 3D printers and laser cutters for R&D to support the development of new technology for TMC Field Operations to deliver innovative solutions for our pilots.


The Opportunity


This is a one-of-a-kind opportunity for a
Technical Manager to join the TMC Field Operations team, working closely with the Chief Pilot & Manager of Field Tech Innovations.

This is a Temporary, Full Time position up to April 2025.


The role will see you developing, managing, and delivering medium-scale projects within the drone program of works across the Division.

Working closely with stakeholders across Transport you will devise project plans and programs to deliver outcomes for the business.


You will also assist in the scoping, designing, trialling and assessment of operational field technology innovations that have the potential to improve field operations capability.


In addition to the above, you will be involved in

  • Delivering multiple projects within work programs, including managing the development of operational and project scopes, business cases, project submissions, communications and reporting, project scheduling, and resourcing.
  • Managing stakeholder relationships through effective communication, negotiation and issues management to ensure stakeholders are engaged throughout the program.
  • Facilitating development and approval of projectspecific quality, safety and environmental requirements, ensuring compliance with all relevant safety and quality standards, facilitating environmental planning/approval and manage the implementation to ensure adherence to conditions of approval.
  • Create forms, templates, policy and procedures to allow successful delivery of projects.
  • Determine project risks, develop a project risk management plan (RMP), facilitate the risk review process and manage, monitor and mitigate project risks through the RMP.


This role will be based out of the Leichardt depot and offers some flexibility in terms of hybrid work arrangements.


About you


We are looking for an innovative, technically astute professional with strong project management skills to make your mark on this brand new, one-of-a-kind position.


To be successful in this role you will display a mix of creativity, technical, and analytical ability, as you will not only be involved in designing tech, but you will be responsible for reporting and analysis within the drone program.


As this role requires you to collaborate with an array of stakeholders across the Transport business you will be a natural communicator with a flair for building strong, lasting relationships.


You will have relevant tertiary qualifications in project management or relevant engineering field and / or demonstrated equivalent experience in managing programs or multiple interdependent projects within a large, complex organisation.

Exposure to drone technology and / or a RePL license would also be a bonus, but this is not essential.


Salary and Benefits
The salary for this position is Transport Grade 9, $142,178 - $159,238 per annum plus superannuation and other benefits. An attractive salary band will be negotiated based on your relevant skills and experience.
