Your Opportunity


Based in Berriedale, Hobart, Chigwell House is a community hub that takes a holistic approach to addresses homelessness and barriers to independence by providing services, information, and events for vulnerable people.

Services include People Staying Connected, Integrated Family Support Service, Youth Beat, and Disability Employment Services.

Chigwell House features a kitchen, community garden, playroom, and outdoor play area which are utilised by community members including MA Housing tenants.


This is a rewarding career opportunity where you will be responsible for assessing, responding, and supporting the varying needs of vulnerable young people requiring service provision.

This is achieved using a client focused intensive case management approach within a holistic and therapeutic framework, and where required lower-level support provisions and outreach.


Your Key Responsibilities

  • Provide targeted youth support to young people aged 1018 years who are often disengaged, have complex support needs and are facing multiple risk challenges. Without service intervention eligible young people for the program are at high risk of escalating into statutory services such as Youth Justice or Child Safety Services.
  • Incorporate both a practical and therapeutic component to address both the client's immediate practical needs as well as addressing some of the underlying issues that have resulted in decision making, behaviours and risk taking of the young person
  • Reduce individual and family risk factors and/or reduced impact of risk factors coupled with increased protective factors
  • Utilise therapeutic interventions with a strengthsbased solutions focused model within a narrative framework. Underpinned by motivational interviewing and increasing personal resilience, the programs aim to improve overall health and wellbeing using the Tasmanian Wellbeing Framework in developing selfidentified goals
  • Working with young people who present with trauma backgrounds
  • Provide arrange of case management approaches suitable to a young person's goals and life complexity including active participation and/ or facilitating case conferences
  • Build honest and trusting relationships, and supporting the young person's capacity while maintaining boundaries of care practices
  • Provide counselling, advocacy, case management, Emotional intelligence education including emotional regulation/anger management and trauma related response interventions. At risk behaviour interventions, harm reduction including alcohol and other drugs, sexual health etc. including seeking support from specialists where appropriate for the young person

Position Requirements
With a significant background in the child, youth & family, social work, health, human services, or other social science disciplines, you will be confident in your case management and assessment processes


Other requirements include:

  • Relevant Tertiary Qualifications and experience in Youth work or related field
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain community networks
  • Proven ability to work as part of a team and with mínimal supervision
  • Ability to work according to the principles of clientcentred practice
  • Capacity to relate to people from different cultural backgrounds
  • High level of communication skills with young people, peers, government departments and the community
  • Highly developed time management and organisational skills
  • Extensive experience in supporting disadvantaged young people to achieve positive outcomes in terms of the Tasmanian Youth at Risk framework and the Tasmanian Child and Youth Wellbeing Strategy
  • Full driver licence with no restrictions
