The Opportunity

We're seeking strong leaders to be part of the Government's new in-house consulting function, known as Australian Government Consulting (AGC).

The new function will bring more strategic thinking back into government, strengthening APS capability and reducing reliance on external consultants for services that can be provided in-house.

It's a unique and exciting opportunity at the forefront of the Government's APS Reform agenda.

You'll be part of the team that provides a high-quality alternative service to external consultants, supporting APS clients across all agencies.

It will involve pioneering and designing a different way of working - a unique APS style of strategic management consulting to deliver impact for the Australian public.

AGC will have three related functions:

  • Delivering core strategic consulting projects to support clients in developing strategic advice for Government and in building high-performing organisations, using a robust consulting methodology that combines the best of private sector approaches and public sector insights.
  • Strengthening APS capability, including by transferring consulting practitioner skillsets to client teams.
  • Supporting agencies to achieve better value when engaging external consultants.
There is scope to develop more service offers and reach more clients over time.

AGC seeks to be a model employer.

It will actively invest in the development of its people, including providing training and mentoring to help you build a specialisation in consulting for government.

You'll work with, and learn from, a diverse pool of partners, including former senior APS leaders and ex-consultants with specialist expertise.

It will also offer diverse, interesting and challenging work.

You'll work closely with the leadership of AGC to build the reputation, brand and business, and scalability of AGC.

You'll lead a team to:

  • Tell our story and bring people along on the journey to attract the right clients
  • Build and manage a pipeline of highquality strategic consulting projects and work with potential clients to scope out goodfit projects for AGC to deliver
  • Identify opportunities for AGC to grow, including by evaluating the performance of AGC and building new service offers that address client needs
  • Manage the financial side of the business
  • Support the secretarial needs of AGC's leadership, including the Advisory Board.

A merit pool may be established and used to fill the same or similar vacancies for 18 months from the date of advertising.

You'll:

  • Have a passion for making a difference and challenging the statusquo
  • Have a demonstrated ability to lead and coach a highperforming team and build an inclusive, supportive culture
  • Use your strong relationships and draw on your extensive networks (or have an ability to build them) to drive opportunities for AGC
  • Skilfully communicate with and influence key stakeholders to achieve desired outcomes
  • Model high levels of integrity and the APS Values and Code of Conduct.
