Staff Specialist in Respiratory and Sleep Medicine

Permanent full time 1.0 FTE (40 hours per week)

We are seeking a Respiratory and Sleep Medicine Physician to provide a high quality services to the Department of Respiratory and Sleep Medicine at John Hunter Hospital

This is an opportunity to work for the largest local health district in NSW servicing a population of 900,000+ across the Hunter, New England and Lower Mid North Coast areas.

John Hunter Hospital is a Level 6, tertiary referral, major trauma and teaching hospital and is the largest hospital in Hunter New England Local Health District with approximately 650 beds and growing and we have strong, innovative connections with Hunter Medical Research Institute and University of Newcastle.


Our Respiratory and Sleep department provides tertiary referral services including Interstitial Lung diseases, Pleural disease, Cystic Fibrosis, Severe asthma and others.

The sleep unit services all our local health district and surrounding areas it comprises of six beds and also conducts home sleep studies - in total approximately sleep studies annually.


  • A primary medical degree registrable with AHPRA and Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (Respiratory & Sleep Medicine) or nearing completion
  • High level of knowledge and demonstrated recent clinical experience in Airways diseases, including international fellowship completed or planned within the near future.
  • Completed or nearing completion in Sleep training
  • Ability or willingness to be trained in Interstitial Lung Disease
  • Will have a professional attitude and flexibility, with a preparedness and ability to participate in after hours overtime and on call rosters
  • Be experienced in and commitment to best practice, quality improvement and clinical governance
  • Have the demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team and provide leadership of a team.
  • Have demonstrated effective clinical communication through the use of information technology and written, verbal and interpersonal skills.
  • A demonstrated commitment to teaching and continuing medical education
