  • Demonstrated experience working as a laboratory technician and in the management of laboratory resources
  • Ability to prepare experiments, conduct training and/or instruction in respect to scientific processes
  • Demonstrated ability to support staff and students in the science laboratory
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of relevant legislation & safety codes (e.g. safety, storage & disposal of dangerous goods and hazardous materials), guidelines and procedures (OHS, first aid & risk assessments)
  • Knowledge of laboratory first aid treatment and procedures for risk assessment within the relative work area

Role:

An Education Support position supports the educational services being provided to students, but does not include duties of teaching.

Positions at this level require demonstrated experience in basic technical and/or scientific principles that are used to develop and adapt work methods and make judgements within the limits of clear guidelines.

The role of a Laboratory Technician requires specialised knowledge that is relied upon to deliver support services and technical support to science laboratories.


The position involves preparation and setting up of experiments and conducting demonstrations, where required, under the supervision of a teacher.

The successful applicant would be expected to assist in the monitoring of relevant occupational health and safety requirements and where necessary, risk assessments within the relative work area.

Under the supervision of a teacher, the position will provide specialist advice to students in relation to the handling and use of materials and equipment used within the science laboratory.

This position is part-time over 5 days per week.


Responsibilities:

The position is responsible for assisting in the efficient operation of the school's Science program. This includes providing technical support, training and preparation of teaching resources as required by teaching staff.

A capacity to exercise judgement, problem solve, organise and prioritise, combined with a sound knowledge of scientific principles will be required.

The provision of support to staff and students in areas such as handling and storage of equipment and chemicals, preparations for experiments, locating and researching source material and operation of computer programs specific to science curriculum will form part of the role.

Work will be expected to be undertaken with mínimal supervision.

The role requires excellent communication skills and an ability to work collaboratively alongside other laboratory staff, members of the science faculty and the school community.


Work Features and Skill Requirements

  • Liaise with science teaching staff regarding their needs, focusing on preparing and prioritising classroom practical work and providing high level of support in day to day activities
  • Provide instruction to students, teachers and other users in the correct handling of hazardous materials and other equipment used within the science laboratories.
  • Consult and liaise with teachers about technical components of curriculum implementation and
  • Prepare required solutions, stains and media for use in laboratory classrooms
  • Ensure that all work areas comply with the regulations set by the National Occupational Health and Safety Commission. Carry out quarterly OHS inspections for your work area and science classrooms.
  • Evaluate and select equipment and materials and make recommendations to curriculum leaders.
  • Maintain a safe chemical storage/handling/disposal system according to current regulations and develop and maintain procedures including chemical stock control relating to the use of hazardous and dangerous goods.
  • Ensure all chemicals are secure and stored in the appropriate storage zones.
  • Assist in field and laboratory tests and the collection of data as required.
  • Assist teachers in the supervision of science experiments and class demonstrations. Ensure all practical classes are fully prepared prior to classes
  • Consult with appropriate bodies to ensure correct disposal of wastes, particularly biological waste.
  • Manage the use and maintenance of equipment within the science area and record any faulty equipment/breakages and organise necessary repairs
  • Ensure safety and security is maintained within the science area by supplying limited quantities and carefully monitoring the use of all dangerous chemicals and equipment.
  • Assist teachers and other staff with the enforcement of appropriate Occupational Health and Safety procedures and risk assessments.
