Non Excutive Director of Communications - Sydney, Australia - United Workers Union

    Default job background
    Description

    Friday, 19 April 2024

    Non-Executive Director of Communications

We are seeking an experienced communications professional to own the communications, media, and marketing strategy of our diverse and dynamic trade union.

This is a unique and exciting opportunity to join the national elected leadership team of an organisation that lives its values through its day-to-day work.

The Communications department at the UWU tells and amplifies member stories, intervenes in, and leads public debates, influences politics and civil society, and builds its power through its members' action, brand, marketing, and reach.

You'll be leading a large and passionate team with a full suite of in-house communications functions.

This position supports flexible ways of working. We encourage a balance of working in the office and remotely and we believe this enables our people to do their best work.

This role can be based out of Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne or Sydney.

United Workers' Union is a powerful member-led union whose sole purpose is to serve the collective interests of members in workplaces and communities by winning significant and long-lasting gains.

The Union is driving change by growing union membership, developing leadership amongst our members, encouraging active member participation in the union, building and enforcing standards in our sectors, and campaigning both politically and in the community.

As a union with a proudly diverse membership, we are committed to equity and inclusion; and continuing to build a union that is truly representative of the workers we cover. We encourage applications from people of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander backgrounds, people from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds, LGBTQIA+ people and women.

The United Workers Union is proudly affiliated with the Australian Labor Party.

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

This is a strategic, operational and management role – the ideal candidate will be able to work across these three functions.

    Strategic:

    • Lead the union's thinking on member, stakeholder and public engagement recognizing the rapidly changing information ecosystems.
    • Active participation in the National Executive including preparation and delivery of quarterly reports.
    • Collaboration on special projects critical to the unions' growth and success

    Operational:

    • Design and delivery of an all-of- union communications strategy.
    • Design and implementation of specific plans relating to the union's activities in:
    • public affairs
    • industrial and workplace campaigning
    • brand and growth
    • Quality assurance of outputs of all three units.

    Management

    • Mentorship and line management of team leaders of these three functional streams
    • Oversight of day-to-day operations and coordination of these three functional streams.
    • Design and accountability for a departmental budget

    KEY SELECTION CRITERIA

We are looking for a candidate with wide range of skills and experience. We recognise you may not tick all these boxes, but we will be evaluating your capacity within these four core competencies.

    • Technical Expertise: Experience working at a high level of proficiency in one or more of the following: media, production, campaigning, politics or marketing.
    • Sector Knowledge: Demonstrated understanding of working with or within a major trade union or equivalent democratic member-based organisation.
    • People Management: Proven people management skills including management of team leaders, mentorship of junior staff and working with people from diverse backgrounds.
    • Leadership: Evidence of high-level strategic thinking, collaboration with other subject experts and accountability for budget and personal integrity.

    REMUNERATION

An attractive remuneration package will be offered to the successful applicant, which will include:

    • Salary of $151,732
    • A motor vehicle or motor vehicle allowance
    • 16% superannuation
    • 6 weeks annual leave plus 25% leave loading

    HOW TO APPLY

Please submit your resume, together with a cover letter addressing the selection criteria and references to Julie Korlevska, Deputy Director (People, Culture and Change) through the UWU Careers Portal

    CLOSING DATE

Completed applications must be received by 4pm (AEDT) Friday 3 May 2024.
