Description
An exciting opportunity exists to join an established, innovative Prehospital and Retrieval Medicine (PHRM) service with Ambulance Tasmania.

We provide an immediate specialist medical team response 24 hours a day from Hobart Airport to the state of Tasmania, including major hospitals (time-critical interfacility transports), islands, roadsides, rural medical centres and remote wilderness areas.

We also provide telephone support (coordination and critical care management advice), disaster preparedness and clinical service development assistance across Ambulance operations.

Our integration within the ambulance service ensures that medical teams are dispatched rapidly, often within minutes of a triple-zero call.

This results in early high-level resuscitation in the field with direct transfer to definitive care, bypassing the ED direct to the operating theatre, catheter lab or interventional radiology suites where required.

As well as working in the field, arriving in regional health centres early during the patient assessment is common, assisting with stabilisation followed by rapid transfer.

Both permanent and fixed-term positions are available.

We are specifically looking for an experienced Prehospital and Retrieval Consultant to take up the role of director of PHRM training with the responsibility to ensure the credentialling of current doctors working within the service and to assist with an exciting opportunity to set up a registrar training programme meeting the Diploma of Pre-hospital and Retrieval Medicine Site Accreditation Standards.

Successful applicants will come from various backgrounds (emergency medicine, anaesthesia and intensive care), with clinical experience as senior decision-makers for a broad range of adult and paediatric emergencies, and proficient in resuscitation and procedural interventions.

They will be excellent team members and demonstrate high-level communication skills, including good negotiation, conflict resolution and interpersonal skills.

They will have a current driver's licence, be able to swim and be physically fit to operate safely in the prehospital (including wilderness/remote area) environment.

A fitness assessment will be required prior to the appointment.

A 24-hour shift-work plus on-call roster will be worked to provide:

  • Critical care and emergency management advice and inter-hospital transport coordination for the Tasmania health system, including AT paramedics and Tasmanian Health Service (THS) doctors and nurses.
  • Primary (prehospital) and secondary (interhospital) medical responses for critically ill and injured patients.
  • General support, education, and professional development opportunities for AT paramedics and doctors.
  • Disaster and Major Incident responses.
  • Research, teaching and quality improvement activities.
